How is AquaChar better than Carbon?
Carbon has long relationship with purifying water. Almost all of the activated carbon used in aquariums (and water purification in general) starts with a base of lignite or bituminous carbon. What most don’t know is that both lignite and bituminous carbon are byproducts of the fossil fuel industry (in the form of coal waste). Because of the low ash point of these carbons they made into a powder, heated at low temperatures, then turned into a paste in order to be granulated to a universal size. The final step is to artificially increased porosity by dipping the pellets into hydrochloric acid and rinsing off. This post-production processing is required but limits the effective life span of activated carbon from days to a couple weeks.
Carbon lasts up to couple of weeks, while AquaChar lasts 4-6+ months (read below about the "why").
While living in Africa and seeing the crisis first hand, Inventor/Applied Quantum Physicist Richard Ricardo was working on a process to purify water on Mars. After learning the methods used to make activated carbon, he looked into biochar for a more natural approach but discovered the temperature limitation before ash left a toxic “pre-smoke” resin that was unsuitable for consumable water. By focusing on how nature purifies itself with extreme pressure and temperature, he created a process using machines designed by rocket scientist to create the world’s first naturally structured carbon designed to purify water. Once back in the states he spent 2 years perfecting the process working with a local university and testing at a local fish store on over 100 fresh and saltwater tanks before he went to market.
Each batch of AquaChar is created over 36-hours using a proprietary 12-step method. AquaChar leaves the natural porosity trees use to bring water from roots to leaves. The end result is a carbon structure that was designed to attract any unwanted organic compounds to purify and clear water. AquaChar not only reacts quicker but lasts longer than any other carbon product on the market.
What makes AquaChar unique is our process burns wood to several thousand degrees higher than the ash point allowing for no post-production processing or use caustic chemicals. As the carbon molecules structures inside AquaChar it forces out impurities which are used as fuel to increase temperature. This leaves behind the lightweight carbon skeleton while keeping the the natural porosity trees use to bring water to their leaves.
What AquaChar Does:
AquaChar has a negative charge: Broken down (positively charged) organics is the cause of most water clarity issues. Negatively charged ions in AquaChar magnetically pull fine particulates out of the water creating crystal clear water in 12-48 hours.
AquaChar naturally buffers pH:For Freshwater AquaChar stabilizes pH between 7.5-7.7 and saltwater between 8.1-8.4. When used in saltwater aquariums, AquaChar also minimizes the nightly pH drops. This additional stability resulting in noticeably better polyp extensions and coral growth.
AquaChar works for several months:Typically 4-6+ months depending on bioload. When particles appear, add the new dose to existing AquaChar to increase the size of your septic tank!
When introduced to water: AquaChar begins to crackles and harden. You can see the oxygen bubbles being released from the surface of AquaChar as it begins to interact.
This creates a smorgasbord:AquaChar has the natural porosity trees use to bring water from roots to leaves. This massive surface area (20 bioballs per gram) of stored organics makes AquaChar the ideal support system for beneficial bacteria to colonize.
You will notice having to clean algae off the glass less: the negative charge not only pulls fine organics but also the algae that builds on the glass.
Which creates a septic tank: Once AquaChar is colonized with beneficial bacteria, the negative charge allows for a more on demand absorption and breakdown of organics which stabilizes ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates.
How To Use AquaChar?
Since all filtration systems are different AquaChar can be used in various ways. It can be placed in hang-on-back, cannister, sumps, inside filter socks, reactors, etc. Most important is that AquaChar and water have enough time to interact.
The most common use is to place AquaChar in a mesh bag, rinse thoroughly, and place in the canister filter or sump. Initially AquaChar will float, but will sink as it fills with organics. This extends the life and provides additional odor adsorption.
Rinse new AquaChar thoroughly before use. Any residual dust is not harmful to your aquarium and will settle inside your filter.
For use in a reactor, rinse AquaChar and start with a slower flow. Increase flow gradually for desired results but do not go beyond a moderate flow. Finding the optimum flow rate to get desired results for your system increases the life of AquaChar.
During monthly maintenance, quickly rinse off any organics using aquarium water to free any excess organics. This offers a limited regeneration within the effective lifespan of AquaChar.
When adding new AquaChar, leave the old AquaChar in the filter. This keeps the beneficial bacteria and prevents unwanted loss of the nitrogen cycle.
Note: If using a protein skimmer some adjustment might be needed the first couple days but should have no issue once water is adjusted.
