Red Phantom Tetra
Red Phantom Tetra, Hyphessobrycon sweglesi (previously referred to as Megalamphodus sweglesi), is a very popular and small tetra introduced into the hobby in the early 1960s. Vivid red body color and a black blotch behind the gills and on top of the dorsal fin distinguishes this diminutive species from others. Thanks to their vivid colors and large dorsal fin, Red Phantom Tetras look best in large shoals.
Care Guide for Red Phantom Tetra
Red Phantom Tetras are small characins and belong to the Characidae family. They are found in the upper Amazon basin and possibly the upper Orinoco basin, Brazil. In nature, these fish are often found swimming in large groups among aquatic plants, tree roots, and branches in slow-moving waters. They will tolerate a wide range of aquarium conditions and are particularly suited for community tanks because of their small size and peaceful temperament. They must be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals and preferably more.
|Max Size:||1.5 inches|
|Water:||72 - 82 F; pH 6.5 - 7.5|
|Temperament:||Peaceful and Social|
Red Phantom tetras like planted aquariums with plant thickets present throughout the aquarium. Adding floating plants will more closely mimic their natural habitat and will make them feel more safe and secure. Since they are rather small, they do not require large aquariums to meet their needs and they are a perfect candidate for a nano aquarium. Additional aquarium decorations such as driftwood and rocks are also recommended. Red Phantom Tetras are shoaling fish and they will look their best in large groups.
Red Phantom Tetras can be kept with many other peaceful fishes, including discus, dwarf cichlids, corydoras catfish, plecos, and many other community fish. They will readily accept a variety of foods, including flakes and small pellets.
