Rummy Nose Tetra

Rummy Nose Tetra, Hemigrammus bleheri (at times sold as Hemigrammus rhodostomus), is a small and beautiful fish. The two species are nearly indistinguishable to the naked eye. The fish has a brilliantly red-colored head (especially when it is happy and healthy) and black and white markings on the tail. These bold and contrasting colors look spectacular especially in large groups of these fish as they swim tightly together back and forth.

Care Guide for Rummy Nose Tetra

Rummy Nose Tetras are small characins and belong to the Characidae family. They are found in the middle of Rio Negro, Brazil, Rio Vaupes, Colombia, and in the Belem region of Brazil. In nature, these fish are often found swimming in large groups among aquatic plants, tree roots, and branches in slow-moving waters. They will tolerate a wide range of aquarium conditions and are particularly suited for community tanks because of their small size and peaceful temperament. They must be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals and preferably more.

Max Size:   1.5 inches
Water:   72 - 82 F; pH 6.0 - 7.5
Difficulty:   Easy
Living Zone:   Middle
Temperament:   Peaceful and Social

Rummy nose tetras will do well in aquariums with live aquarium plants and sufficient swimming space. Since they are rather small, they do not require large aquariums to make them happy. Additional aquarium decorations such as driftwood and rocks are recommended as they will more closely approximate their natural habitat, providing shelter, making the fish feel safe, and allowing them to exhibit their interesting natural behavior. Rummy nose tetras are schooling fish and they look spectacular and will do best in larger groups.

Rummy Nose tetras can be kept with many other peaceful fishes, including discus, dwarf cichlids, corydoras catfish, plecos, and many other community fish. They will readily accept a variety of foods, including flakes and small pellets.
