Description
Hygrophila Blue (Hygrophila salicifolia)
Hygrophila Blue (often sold as Hygro Blue) is a fast-growing, beginner-friendly stem plant that builds an instant “lush backdrop” in planted tanks. It grows sturdy upright stems with distinctive, angular/triangular leaves, and under good light the foliage can take on a subtle blue-green cast—more of a cool tint than a true blue leaf, but enough to stand out from standard bright-green stems.
Hygrophila Blue Overview
f you want a plant that fills in quickly, cleans up the look of corners, and gives fish a thicker background to move through, Hygrophila Blue is a strong choice.
Aquarists appreciate Hygrophila Blue for:
- Fast growth and easy success: a reliable background stem for most freshwater setups
- Bold leaf shape: triangular leaves add a different texture than typical oval/needle stems
- Great for stability: rapid nutrient uptake can help reduce excess nutrients when paired with good maintenance
- Simple propagation: trim the tops and replant cuttings to thicken the group
The big advantage is that it gives you a “full” planted look quickly—especially when you plant it in a grouped stand rather than single scattered stems.
For aquascaping, Hygrophila Blue shines in the back corners and along the rear glass behind hardscape. It looks especially clean behind Seiryu Rock (cool tones + crisp contrast) or alongside Lava Rock (a rugged, natural riverbed feel). Add a darker wood accent like Saba Wood to frame the grouping, and a light sprinkle of botanicals—like a few of Aquatic Veralu Leaves near the base—to make the scene feel more natural and established.
Caring for Hygrophila Blue
Like many Hygrophila species, this plant is adaptable and forgiving, but it grows best when you give it a consistent routine. In moderate conditions it will still do well, and in stronger conditions it will take off—meaning you’ll want to prune regularly to keep the stand tidy and prevent it from shading plants in front. After trimming, replant the healthiest tops and remove older bottoms as needed to keep the group dense and fresh.
CO₂ is not required, but it can noticeably increase size and speed, and richer substrate + steady fertilization helps it stay fuller instead of “leggy.” If you’re chasing the best coloration, consistent micronutrients (including iron in a complete routine) can help support stronger pigment expression—especially in brighter setups.
- Light: Moderate (looks best moderate–high)
- Temperature Range: 70–82°F
- Placement: Background
- CO₂: Not required (beneficial)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Fast; prune and replant to maintain shape
Once it’s established, Hygrophila Blue is basically a “trim-and-train” plant. Plant stems in a well-spaced group so light reaches the lower leaves, let it climb, then trim and replant the best tops to thicken the stand. If you’re running brighter aquarium light, keep the routine steady—clean water, consistent nutrients, and timely pruning—so the plant stays lush instead of sparse. One practical note: its leaves can be relatively delicate compared to thick epiphytes like Anubias, so it’s not the best choice for destructive animals (like crayfish) or very rough, plant-shredding fish.
Hygrophila Blue is also available potted. We offer other varieties of Hygrophila species, including Hygro Araguaia, Hygrophila Pinnatifida, Wisteria (Hygrophila Difformis), and Hygrophila Willow.

Great plant!
Posted by Chris Bachman on 15 Nov 2021I had never bought these before so didn't know what to expect. They came to me healthy and robust, which was a nice change from other stores. And, they are nice and large and spread out to really add some character to the tank. In a 55 gal I have to always look for larger plants and these fit the bill nicely. No complaints, very happy.
