Description
Amazon Sword (Echinodorus sp)
A classic background plant for freshwater aquariums, Amazon Sword is known for its large, lush green leaves, easy care, and ability to instantly give your tank a full, “finished” look.
Amazon Sword Overview
Amazon Sword (Echinodorus sp.) originates from South America and is one of the most popular aquarium plants in the hobby—for good reason. It forms a rosette of broad, lance-shaped leaves that fan out from the base, creating a dense, bushy clump of greenery.
In the aquarium, a mature Amazon Sword makes an ideal background or centerpiece plant, especially in medium to large tanks. Its tall, arching leaves:
- Provide a striking backdrop for your aquascape
- Create natural cover for fish that appreciate shelter
- Help “hide” equipment such as heaters, filter intakes, and airline tubing
- Serve as natural spawning sites for many species, such as angelfish and discus, which often lay their eggs directly on the broad leaves
Because of its size and presence, a well-grown Amazon Sword can easily become the focal point of your aquascape. It is also a heavy root feeder and will send out a deep, extensive root system. Over time, it may produce runners or side shoots that can be separated and replanted to propagate new plants.
Caring for Amazon Sword
Amazon Sword is undemanding and adapts well to a wide range of aquarium conditions, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced aquascapers alike.
- Light: Moderate (can tolerate lower light, but grows fuller with moderate lighting)
- Temperature Range: 68–82°F
- Placement: Background / focal point
- CO₂: Not required (though growth and leaf size may improve with CO₂ and good nutrition)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Moderate
You can plant Amazon Sword in standard aquarium gravel; no specialized soil is absolutely required. However, it will perform best in a loosely packed, nutrient-rich substrate or when supplemented with root tabs, since it absorbs much of its nutrition through its roots. As the plant matures, its root system can become quite large, spreading deep and wide beneath the substrate, so it is important to give it enough space so it does not crowd out neighboring plants. For best health and appearance, periodically remove older or damaged leaves and thin out any runners or side shoots if you want to keep the plant’s size in check.
Amazon Sword is also available potted, which can make initial planting easier and help the plant establish quickly once introduced into your aquarium.

Didn't last a Week
Posted by Curtis Chan on 8 May 2020Purchased these for already established quarantine tank with no substrate on the bottom. Added very small split shot weights to keep them from floating. Both after one week already have transparent leaves indicating the plants are dying. --Modern Aquarium reply-- Curtis, we are sorry to hear you had an issue with the Amazon. Please contact us and we will refund you for the plant. That being said please keep in mind Amazons are very heavy root feeders and do not do well without substrate in general. Take care and we hope to hear from you soon.

Beautiful
Posted by Brittany Knapczyk on 8 May 2020Arrived super quick, very healthy and full. For mediums, they’re big, almost as tall as my 10 gallon betta tank. Great additions. I’ll definitely be ordering from here again

Amazon Sword
Posted by Curtis on 7 May 2020I received 2 medium sized plants. The only thing about them is that the roots were cut off and left with 3/4" of roots. I don't know why they were both cut that way.

Amazon Swords
Posted by James Smith on 25 Apr 2020Totally satisfied with these plants. Indeed, they arrived larger and in better condition that I expected. And each plant had one or two shoots that each had one or two additional small plants with roots. I will soon be able to clip them off and plant in the substrate. Very satisfied. Will definitely give you more business.

Posted by Denny Lukas Sr on 10 Apr 2020I just received an order of 4 plants, one was rather small for a med. size and compared to the other 3 and the reason for only 4 stars instead of 5. Otherwise ALL were Excellent in all aspects, and a plus to my tanks!

Awesome
Posted by Holly on 6 Mar 2020Finally, a true amazon sword plant. I have tired many other swords even from hobby fish stores, and they never survived. Most likely fake "look alikes". I thought I'd give this one a try, and I'm amazed. It arrived with a healthy root bunch and lots of leaves. After 1 week in the tank it sprouted new leaves and has continued to grow quickly! This makes me hopeful because I have never had good luck with live plants in the past. I'll be ordering here again.
