Baby Tears Giant (Micranthemum Umbrosom) | Cup

Giant Baby Tears (Micranthemum umbrosum) is a bright, small-leaved plant that brings a clean, fresh-green look to planted aquariums. Don’t let the “giant” name fool you—this is still a fine-textured plant with small round leaves; it’s called “giant” mainly to distinguish it from the tiniest true carpeting species. In the right setup, it can form a lush, low-growing mat in the foreground, and it also works beautifully as a light, airy accent when allowed to grow upward or even float.

Giant Baby Tears Overview

Giant Baby Tears is especially useful when you’re trying to make a layout feel complete rather than “plants placed on top of hardscape.” The small, bright-green leaves act like a natural filler that smooths transitions: it softens the hard edges of rock lines, helps blend the base of driftwood into the substrate, and visually “stitches” separate elements together so the scape appears as one cohesive scene. Planted in groups, it creates a lush, cushiony texture that looks deliberate and manicured—almost like a trimmed garden groundcover—without feeling stiff or artificial. And because it responds well to pruning, you can shape it to match your design: keep it low and tight for a clean foreground patch, let it grow a bit taller to create gentle contour and depth around stonework, or use it to fill negative space near pathways so your aquascape looks detailed and mature rather than sparse.

Aquarists appreciate Giant Baby Tears for:

  • Clean, bright-green leaves: a crisp color that pops in most aquascapes
  • Versatile use: can be grown low in the foreground, as a loose midground accent, or even floated
  • Trim-and-thicken growth habit: pruning encourages a denser, tidier look over time
  • Easy propagation: cut and replant trimmings to expand your planting

For aquascaping, Giant Baby Tears looks especially natural tucked into the edges of aquascaping rocks, where the small leaves soften hard angles and fill negative space without feeling bulky. It also pairs nicely with a darker driftwood accent like Blackwood, and a light scatter of botanicals helps tie the whole scene together with a more habitat-style finish.

Caring for Baby Tears Giant

When you grow Giant Baby Tears as a foreground plant, the key is strong light reaching the substrate. Under higher light it stays tighter and more compact; if light is weak or the plant gets shaded, it tends to grow taller and looser rather than forming a neat lawn. A nutrient-rich substrate helps it root and spread more confidently, and steady fertilization supports fuller, healthier growth. While CO₂ isn’t required, it can help the plant grow denser and recover faster after trimming in brighter, faster-growth setups.

Planting tip: separate the portion into small plugs and plant them in tight groups using tweezers. Once it roots, trim regularly with sharp aquascaping scissors to encourage bushier growth and prevent the top from shading the lower layer. Cuttings can be replanted to thicken the patch.

  • Light: High (especially for low, lawn-like growth)
  • Temperature Range: 72–86°F
  • Placement: Foreground (can also be used floating)
  • CO₂: Not required (beneficial for denser, faster growth)
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
  • Growth Rate: Medium–Fast under good conditions

Once it’s established, Giant Baby Tears is a “shapeable” plant that rewards simple routines. Keep it in an open spot where taller plants won’t shade it, trim it before it becomes too tall, and replant healthy cuttings to build a fuller, more uniform patch. If you decide to float it instead, it will still grow and can provide a softer surface accent—just keep in mind that floating growth will naturally be looser and less “carpet-like” than a well-lit, trimmed foreground planting.

Baby Tears is also available potted.

Giant Baby Tears is a versatile, bright-green “texture plant” that can be trained into a low, tidy foreground mat under strong light—or used more loosely as an accent or floating greenery. Give it a bright spot, trim it regularly, and replant cuttings to thicken your patch, and you’ll get a soft, natural-looking carpet effect that makes rockwork and hardscape transitions look more mature and finished.

Ordered this in november, arrived quickly in pristine condition despite cool weather. Quite densely packed into a small condiment-sized cup without media (so I probably would not let this sit too long). Not sure if this is cultured, but it was definitely snail/pest free. Planted this in both submerged and emersed setups and both are doing well. The submerged growth seems to be doing decently without CO2 so far. Overall, I am quite satisfied and would definitely recommend buying this pleasant US native from Modern Aquariums.
