Description

Blackwood Wood | L1

Blackwood is driftwood that resembles in appearance bogwood found in swamps, bogs, or rivers. Blackwood typically has a weathered and gnarled appearance with irregular shapes, knots, and cracks, which can create interesting and natural-looking underwater landscapes. Blackwood’s extended submersion in water gives it unique characteristics and dark, nearly or completely black, coloration. Blackwood is often sought after by aquarium enthusiasts for its aesthetic appeal and the benefits it can provide to aquariums.

Incorporating Blackwood in the Aquarium

One of the primary reasons to use blackwood in aquariums is for its aesthetic appeal. The dark color and unique shapes of bog wood create a visually interesting and natural-looking environment in the tank. It is especially popular in biotope aquariums, where enthusiasts aim to replicate specific natural habitats. It can help recreate the look of streams, rivers, and swamps in the aquarium.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, blackwood provides hiding places for fish and invertebrates, allowing them to feel secure and reduce stress. This is particularly beneficial for shy or territorial species. As driftwood leaches tannins into the water, it can lower the pH and soften the water, which generally is beneficial for fish, and particularly so for certain species of fish that prefer acidic and soft water conditions, such as many Amazonian or Southeast Asian species like tetras, cichlids, and plecos. Blackwood often serves as a surface for the growth of algae and biofilm, which are natural food sources for many pleco species. This can be particularly beneficial for their diet and overall health.

    Blackwood

As soon as I put in it the aquarium all of the fish and turtle come over to investigate, and all appeared to be very please with it swimming it and out and around it. I am so very pleased when it arrived.

    Transformed my tank!
Posted by Melinda DeCoste on 8 Sep 2020

This is not the"piece" of Blackwood that I purchased, but since each piece is unique, I am only able to write a review for one that is currently on sale. I took a leap of faith purchasing a piece of wood for $49.95 and I am sooo glad that I did; I literally said "Oh my 'gosh'!" when I pulled it out of the box. The the color of the wood is striking, with streaks of reddish-brown throughout. It's a hefty pice of wood-feels weighty in the hand-yet it will still rise to the top of the tank if it's not weighted down/secured. The piece that I purchased transformed my tank from looking average to one that would make anyone say, "Ahhh...!"
