Description

Cardamine Lyrata (Japanese Cress)

Cardamine lyrata—often called Japanese Cress or Japanese Ivy-Leaved Cress—is a graceful, fast-growing stem plant with soft, rounded leaves that resemble tiny ivy. Native to East Asia (commonly associated with Japan and Korea), it brings a light, airy look to planted aquariums and is especially useful when you want natural movement and a “wild streambank” feel rather than a perfectly manicured hedge. Most leaves are bright green, but under certain conditions you may see subtle bronze or purplish tones mixed in.

Cardamine Lyrata Overview

This plant grows in upright stems with branching side shoots, creating a loose, bushy mass over time. Because it’s quick to take off, it’s a great “filler” plant for adding volume and soft texture in the midground and background.

Aquarists appreciate Cardamine lyrata for:

  • Soft, ivy-like leaves: a distinctive shape that adds gentle texture
  • Fast growth and easy success: fills space quickly in a planted tank
  • Natural movement: sways nicely in flow for a lively, river-edge look
  • Easy trimming and replanting: cut tops, replant, and it thickens over time

For aquascaping, Cardamine lyrata looks best used as a flowing background or midground “thicket” behind rockwork and wood. It pairs beautifully with crisp hardscape like Petrified Rock or Ohko Dragon Rock, where the rounded leaves soften sharp stone lines. It can also be used to create a green “curtain” behind a focal plant or to fill corners so the layout looks lush and complete.

Caring For Cardamine Lyrata

Cardamine lyrata is easy to care for and adapts well to a range of aquarium conditions. It does not require intense light, but it typically grows faster and fuller under stronger lighting. A nutrient-rich substrate helps it root and branch more confidently, but it can also do well in simpler setups as long as it has consistent nutrients available—either from the substrate or from a steady fertilization routine. Root tabs can support stronger growth in inert gravel, and liquid fertilizers help keep new leaves vibrant as the plant grows quickly.

Because it can grow vigorously, plan on occasional pruning to maintain shape and prevent it from shading plants around it. Trim the tops to control height and encourage bushier side growth, and remove any yellowing or older leaves cleanly. Sharp aquascaping scissors make routine shaping quick and tidy.

  • Light: Moderate (stronger light supports faster, fuller growth)
  • Temperature Range: 70–82°F
  • Placement: Midground–Background
  • CO₂: Not required (beneficial for faster growth and denser form)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Growth Rate: Fast

Once established, Cardamine lyrata is a “shapeable volume plant.” Use trimming to decide the look you want—let it grow taller for a natural flowing background, or trim more often to keep it compact and bushy. Either way, it’s an excellent choice for aquarists who want a lush planted feel without high demands.

    Good quality

There's a lot of factors that come into play when buying anything live online. From water quality that the store uses to temps in your area and the areas along the route. With that being said, everything arrived alive and in great condition. The only probably I had was on my end I received the plants and when painting them in the pond/aquarium I'm building I poked a hole in the liner with a knife that was dropped. So I'll be ordering a few that didn't make it due to me but other than that the plants were fine and the rest more sitting in a bucket are doing well.

Beautiful plant, propagates easily and has a lovely bright green that livens the tank. Unfortunately, my Mystery snails love munching on it, so I keep some in a rehab tank and transplant to the nano every now and then so I do not lose it completely.

    Vibrant and Ethereal

The two bunches of cardamine lyrata I received are stunning! The leaves are healthy, green, and vibrant. They've quickly adapted to my new and cycling 10 gallon and are growing SO quickly! Though the stems reached about three-quarters of the way up my tank when I first placed them in roughly a week ago, the new leaves are now peaking through the surface of the water, and I love the vines framing the back corners of my tank. I am so pleased. My fish love them even more. Thank you so much for these plants :)
