Aquarium driftwood does more than just look pretty! They also enhance the tank environment and water chemistry. The most common chemical effect of driftwood is the release of tannins, which lower pH levels to create a more acidic environment that’s beneficial to most types of fish. You can also expect some water discoloration from the tannins. Driftwood can also provide a habitat for beneficial bacteria that help break down waste and improve water quality.
You should soak and clean your driftwood prior to placing it in your aquarium. While we inspect all of our driftwood for sale, you should still conduct your own inspection upon arrival. Presoaking your wood can prevent the release of high tannins in your tank and ensure the wood sinks properly during installation.
