Description
Hygrophila Pinnatifida
Hygrophila pinnatifida is a distinctive Indian stem/epiphyte plant that brings an entirely different texture to planted aquariums. Its deeply lobed, fern-like leaves and warm, two-tone coloration make it a favorite in aquascaping for adding character and “something new” to layouts that are already full of more typical stem plants and grasses.
Hygrophila Pinnatifida Overview
In the aquarium, Hygrophila pinnatifida produces finely divided, pinnate leaves that resemble small, underwater ferns. The upper side of the leaf is usually olive to green-brown, while the underside can show dark green to burgundy tones, giving the plant a rich, layered look. It can grow rooted in the substrate or attached to hardscape, behaving much like an epiphyte.
Aquascapers value H. pinnatifida for:
- Unique, fern-like leaf shape: The heavily lobed, “antlered” leaves look completely different from typical broad-leaf and grassy plants, instantly adding visual variety and breaking up monotony in the scape.
- Striking two-tone coloration: Green to brown tops with darker, often burgundy undersides create subtle color contrast that reads as “mature” and natural, especially around wood and rock.
- Ability to grow on hardscape: Hygrophila pinnatifida can be attached to rocks, driftwood, or decor, allowing you to grow a living, textured layer directly on your hardscape—great for covering bare surfaces and blending structural elements into the planting.
- Versatile placement: It works beautifully in the midground or as a lower background accent, and when grown on wood or stone, it can “bridge” between foreground carpets and taller stems.
Used thoughtfully, Hygrophila Pinnatifida can become a signature plant in your layout—clinging to Seiryu Stone or Driftwood on Slate, cascading from branches, or forming a small, sculptural group in the midground that immediately draws the eye.
Care Guide for Hygrophila Pinnatifida
Hygrophila pinnatifida is adaptable and will do well in a wide range of aquarium conditions, though it really shines with moderate or better lighting and a stable environment. It can be grown rooted in soil or planted-tank substrates, or attached to hardscape much like Java Fern or Anubias.
To attach it to rocks or driftwood, gently tie the plant using cotton thread, or use an aquascaping glue to secure the base. Over time, roots will grip the surface and the plant will begin to send out new shoots. When planted in substrate, make sure the main growing point is not buried too deeply; give it a little room to spread.
Regular trimming is important to keep Hygrophila Pinnatifida compact and bushy. By trimming the top stems with sharp aquascaping scissors and allowing side shoots to develop, you can encourage a fuller, low-growing shape rather than tall, lanky stems. Replanting healthy cuttings or attaching them to new pieces of hardscape is an easy way to multiply the plant and extend its presence throughout the aquascape.
While the plant does not require special care to survive, good lighting will bring out its best colors and keep the growth tighter and more compact. A nutrient-rich substrate, regular fertilization, and optional CO₂ supplementation will further enhance color and vigor, especially in more advanced, high-energy planted tanks.
- Light: Moderate (stronger light for best color and compact growth)
- Temperature Range: 60–82°F
- Placement: Midground / Background, or attached to rocks and driftwood
- CO₂: Not required, but beneficial in brighter setups
- Difficulty: Moderate (easiest in stable, well-maintained tanks)
- Growth Rate: Medium
Hygrophila pinnatifida is particularly effective when you want to add texture and interest to hardscape—growing from rock crevices or wood, its unusual leaf structure gives the impression of a well-aged, naturally overgrown underwater scene.

This one's a favorite
Posted by Glenn on 25 Aug 2021Nice full bunches. Planted the individual branches among the rocks in the tank. They already look like a forest.

Live Plants
Posted by Debra Hiebert on 2 Jun 2021Perfectly healthy plants, but didn't stay anchored very well in my substrate. This is MY error, not the plants - I have marbles instead of smaller substrate. So next time, I'll spring for potted on this one.

Looks exactly as pictured - but no roots/just cuttings
Posted by Susan L. on 2 Oct 2020I have never tried growing this plant before. I was pleasantly surprised with the size it came in. It already looks like a full grown plant in my 10gal. It came rubber banded in 2 bunches. They are cuttings, BTW. But from what I read on other sites about this plant, this is an acceptable method to propagate them, though not ideal. They have been in the tank ~1+ weeks and so far, they still look great. I have kept them in their rubber bands (looks as pictured). I wasn't aware that this plant can get big fast.. it is already making my tank look like a fully mature planted tank (I recently gutted and replanted a new tank). No wilted leaves so far and I can see them "make pearls", so despite them being cuttings, they are doing just fine in the tank.

Good but heads up: these are cuttings!
Posted by Nojan on 21 Aug 2020These plants came in HUGE!!! They were very tall which can be nice if that's what you're going for but definitely needed a good trimming to be more full and compact. These stems were cuttings and didn't have any roots which I was not expecting. Propagating can be hard for your plant but i've had these in my tank for a week and they seem to be super happy and are pearling and already starting to show new growth after I trimmed them.
