Description
Ludwigia Red (Ludwigia Repens)
Ludwigia repens—often simply called Ludwigia Red—is a classic stem plant that adds warm color and lush volume to planted aquariums. Depending on light and nutrients, its leaves can range from olive-green and coppery tones to deeper reds near the top, especially as stems approach the surface. One of the best things about Ludwigia Red is that it rarely looks flat or monotone—healthy stands often show subtle shifts in hue that make the background feel alive and dimensional.
Ludwigia Red Overview
Ludwigia Red is a fast, forgiving grower that’s easy to shape. Plant it in grouped stands for a bold background, or use it to create a “color lane” behind rockwork and driftwood.
Aquarists appreciate Ludwigia Red for:
- Natural red-to-green variation: warm tones that intensify with stronger light
- Fast growth and easy success: fills out the background quickly
- Great for layout structure: strong vertical lines and bushy groupings with trimming
- Simple propagation: trim and replant cuttings to thicken the stand
For aquascaping, Ludwigia Red looks best when planted in tightly grouped stems so the color reads as a deliberate block rather than scattered stalks. It pairs beautifully behind stonework like Seiryu Rock (cool gray + warm reds), and it’s a great companion to green midground plants that need contrast. It’s also practical: a tall, dense stand can naturally hide heaters, intakes, and other equipment without looking like you’re “hiding” anything.
Caring for Ludwiga Red
Ludwigia Red is adaptable and will thrive in many aquarium conditions, but its look changes depending on how you run the tank. With moderate light it grows well and may show more green/bronze tones. With stronger light (and consistent nutrition), tops become tighter and coloration typically deepens—especially near the surface.
As stems reach the top, Ludwigia can become more compact and may start creeping horizontally at the surface if left untrimmed, creating a canopy effect. Regular pruning keeps it tidy and encourages bushier, denser growth below. The easiest method is “trim and replant”: cut the healthiest top sections and replant them, then remove older lower portions as needed.
A nutrient-rich substrate helps, and consistent fertilization supports faster growth and better color. Tools make a big difference here—aquascaping tweezers help you plant individual stems cleanly without uprooting nearby plants, and sharp scissors make quick work of shaping the stand.
- Light: Moderate (stronger light supports deeper red tones)
- Temperature Range: 71–83°F
- Placement: Background
- CO₂: Not required (beneficial for faster, denser growth)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Fast
Once it’s established, Ludwigia Red is basically a “shapeable backdrop.” Plant it in a grouped stand, keep a steady routine, and trim before it shades itself. Over time, that simple trim-and-replant rhythm turns a few stems into a dense, colorful background that makes the entire aquascape look fuller and more professionally composed.
Ludwigia Red is also available potted.

Great plant!
Posted by Julia on 16 Dec 2020I bought 5 other plants in one order, but these were definitely my favorite! They're a pretty good size and look to be in excellent condition! Placing a bunch of them in the corner made my kuhli loaches feel comfortable enough to come out of hiding and swim around them. Love it!

ludwigia repens
Posted by Steve Brorsen on 27 Nov 2020Really nice and fresh. A note: last time I ordered them they arrived on a very hot day. They were hot to the touch and fell apart within a week or two. The snails I ordered came with a small cold pack. Maybe one for plants in hot weather?
