Description
Ludwigia Super Red Mini
Ludwigia Super Red Mini is one of the easiest ways to add true red color to a planted aquarium without needing a massive plant or a complicated layout. In stronger light, it develops compact stems with small, oval leaves that can turn intensely red; in more moderate light, the plant often shifts toward warmer olive-green tones while still keeping that clean Ludwigia shape. The “mini” growth habit makes it especially useful for creating controlled red accents that look deliberate rather than overwhelming.
Ludwigia Super Red Mini Overview
This plant is best used as a midground-to-background stem grouping where you can build a dense “red patch” and shape it with trimming. As it grows upward, the top growth often becomes tighter and more compact, and if you let it reach the surface it can even creep horizontally, creating a soft, colorful canopy effect near the top of the tank.
Aquarists appreciate Ludwigia Super Red Mini for:
- Compact red color: small leaves that create a crisp, high-definition red accent
- Fast, forgiving growth: adapts well and fills in quickly once established
- Easy trimming and replanting: cut tops, replant, and the stand thickens over time
- Great contrast plant: makes green stems and darker hardscape look sharper by comparison
For aquascaping, Super Red Mini looks especially striking planted behind Seiryu Rock or tucked into the negative spaces created by aquarium rocks like, for example, Seiryu Stone by Pound, where the reds pop against cool gray and warm earthy tones. A darker driftwood accent like Blackwood or Saba Wood helps frame the color so it reads as a focal highlight rather than a random red stem in the background. To finish the scene with a more natural feel, a light scatter of botanicals—like Aquatic Thelembu Pods or Aquatic Avocado Leaves around the base of the hardscape—adds realism and makes the entire layout feel more established.
Caring for Ludwigia Super Red Mini
Super Red Mini is adaptable and grows quickly under a wide range of conditions, but its appearance changes depending on how you run the tank. If your goal is intense red, prioritize stronger light and consistent fertilization; if you run more moderate light, expect more green/olive tones and slightly looser growth. It does not require CO₂ to live, but stable CO₂ can improve density, speed, and overall “tightness” of the stems—especially if you’re pushing stronger light and want a compact, premium look.
Planting tip: separate stems and plant them as a grouped stand rather than a tight bound bunch. Give each stem a little space so light and flow reach the lower leaves, then let it climb. Once the tops hit your desired height, trim with curved scissors and replant the healthiest, most colorful tips using straight tweezers. That trim-and-replant routine is what turns a few stems into a thick, bushy red grouping instead of a tall, sparse stand.
- Light: Moderate (stronger light brings out deeper red and tighter growth)
- Temperature Range: 72–82°F
- Placement: Midground–Background
- CO₂: Not required (beneficial for best density and color)
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
- Growth Rate: Fast under good conditions
Once it’s established, maintenance is simple: keep a steady routine, trim before it shades itself, and use those trimmings to thicken the patch. If you allow it to reach the surface, you can either embrace the canopy look for shade and texture, or trim back and keep the group compact and “bushy” for a cleaner Dutch-style block of color. Either way, Super Red Mini is a dependable red stem that rewards consistency with an eye-catching, high-contrast aquascape result.

Posted by Rebecca Swartz on 21 May 2020My first time ordering the Super Red Mini, and I didn't know what to expect, but I was not disappointed. Gorgeous stem plants (approx 5 in a bunch) and LOTS of colour. I'm really pleased with how they look in my 14 gallon cube, such a burst of red and texture!
