Description

Rotala Red (Indica)

Rotala Red is a classic fine-leaf stem plant that adds soft texture and warm color to planted aquariums. It grows small, delicate-looking oval leaves that can shift from olive-green to pinkish tones when light and nutrition are strong—especially near the tops where the plant gets the most light. Planted in dense groups, Rotala Red creates a clean, “high-end” background that makes green plants look brighter and hardscape lines look sharper.

Rotala Red Overview

Rotala is a go-to for aquascapers because it’s easy to shape and looks best when treated like a “color block” rather than a single stem.

Aquarists appreciate Rotala Red for:

  • Soft, fine texture: small leaves that create a delicate, detailed backdrop
  • Warm color potential: olive-to-pink tones that intensify toward the top
  • Easy shaping: trim it to form a dense, bushy stand
  • Simple propagation: replant trimmings to thicken the group over time

For aquascaping, Rotala Red looks especially striking behind rockwork—where the warm tones create contrast—or used in a corner to build a subtle “pink glow” that balances the scape. It also pairs beautifully with bold green midground plants—like Cryptocoryne wendtii (green/brown varieties), Anubias, and Java Fern varieties—creating a layered look with strong green structure in front and softer pink tones behind.

Caring for Rotala Red

Rotala Red adapts well to a range of aquarium conditions, but its best look comes from consistent light and steady nutrients. Under moderate light it will still grow, often staying more olive/green and growing a bit looser. Under stronger light with good nutrition, it tends to grow tighter at the top with more pink coloration.

If your goal is the tightest growth and the strongest pink/red tones at the tops, a high-quality planted-tank light like the Fluval Plant Spectrum 4.0 Bluetooth 24/7 LED Aquarium Light is a great match because it delivers strong, even coverage and a consistent schedule that helps Rotala Red grow more predictably and color up more reliably.

Plant it in groups and give stems a little space so light and flow reach the lower portions. As it grows taller, trim the tops and replant the healthiest cuttings—this is the easiest way to build a dense, compact “bush” instead of a tall, sparse stand. Regular trimming also prevents the plant from shading itself.

  • Light: Moderate–High
  • Temperature Range: 65–85°F
  • Placement: Background (or tall midground grouping)
  • CO₂: Not required (beneficial for faster, denser growth)
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
  • Growth Rate: Fast–Moderate (faster in stronger conditions)

Once established, Rotala Red is all about maintenance rhythm: trim, replant, and shape. That cycle steadily thickens the stand, improves density, and keeps the group looking intentional and “scaped” rather than overgrown.

Rotala Red is also available potted.

    Hoping they will get better

These arrived pretty beat up and smooshed. I think the plant will recover. Top leaves seem to have sprouted new and green so I have some hope but so far it’s pretty abused looking.
