Description
Sparkle Sword (Echinodorus sp)
Sparkle Sword is a beautiful Echinodorus variety that brings classic sword-plant structure with a distinctive “speckled shimmer” effect. It’s known for vibrant green, oval-shaped leaves on sturdy stems, often with subtle reddish tones—plus lighter blotches that can look like they sparkle when aquarium light hits the leaf surface. Like many swords, it’s native to South American environments and grows into a lush rosette that makes a tank feel fuller and more established.
Sparkle Sword Overview
Sparkle Sword is an excellent choice when you want a bold, leafy plant that still has visual detail. It works as a background anchor in smaller tanks and a midground-to-background feature in larger aquascapes.
Aquarists appreciate Sparkle Sword for:
- Distinctive leaf patterning: lighter blotches that create a unique “sparkle” look
- Lush rosette growth: broad leaves that add structure and depth
- Beginner-friendly toughness: adapts well to a wide range of aquariums
- Fish-friendly cover: creates natural shelter and calmer zones
For aquascaping, Sparkle Sword is best used as a “backbone” plant you build around. Place it behind rockwork or driftwood so the leaves rise up and frame the scene, then layer smaller plants in front to create a smooth transition.
To create that clean, layered look, pair Sparkle Sword with smaller plants in the foreground and midground. Low, compact options like Staurogyne repens, Cryptocoryne parva, or Cryptocoryne lutea make an excellent transition at the base of the sword, while carpet-style plants like Dwarf Hairgrass (including the coco mat version) or Glosso can finish the front edge with a neat “lawn” effect. For extra texture on hardscape nearby, adding an epiphyte accent like Anubias (or a finer-leaf Java Fern variety) helps tie the entire layout together without competing with the sword’s broad leaves.
Sparkle Sword also doubles as a practical solution for hiding equipment—its broad foliage can naturally obscure heaters, intakes, and tubing without looking like you’re trying to hide anything.
Caring for Sparkle Sword
Sparkle Sword is easy to care for and a great beginner plant, but like most Echinodorus, it’s a strong root feeder. It will do best in a nutrient-rich planted substrate, and if you’re using inert gravel or sand, it’s worth supporting the root zone with root tabs placed near (not directly on top of) the crown.
Moderate light is enough for healthy growth, but stronger light typically pushes faster growth and fuller leaves. Keep the crown just above the substrate line (don’t bury it), and remove older outer leaves if they become worn or shaded to keep the rosette looking clean and vigorous. Under good conditions, it can reach around 12 inches, and it may produce runners or baby plants that you can separate and replant to expand your planting.
- Light: Moderate (stronger light supports faster growth and fuller foliage)
- Temperature Range: 68–82°F
- Placement: Midground–Background (background in smaller tanks)
- CO₂: Not required (beneficial for faster growth)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Moderate
Beyond looks, fish tend to use sword plants. The broad leaves create natural cover and resting areas, and many aquarists have observed fish like Angelfish and Discus using sword leaves as a spawning surface, laying eggs on the wide leaf blades.
Modern Aquarium also offers a wide range of sword plants in different sizes and styles—including Amazon Sword, Red Flame Sword, Red Rubin Sword, and Chain Sword—so you can build anything from a single focal plant to a full layered “sword forest” aquascape.

Sparkle sword
Posted by Sarahdactyl on 11 Dec 2024This plant is beautiful. I’m using inert substrate with root tabs and moderate lighting. There was essentially no shock after shipment and it has exploded with new growth. It’s putting all of my others plants to shame.
