Description
Azolla Caroliniana (Water Velvet) | 4 oz Cup
Azolla caroliniana—often called Water Velvet—is a unique floating plant that brings a soft, natural surface canopy to your aquarium. Native to North America (with a range that extends into parts of Mexico and the Caribbean), it forms tiny, overlapping fronds that look almost like a miniature floating “moss carpet” on the water’s surface. In moderate light it stays a fresh green, and under brighter lighting it can develop warm reddish hues, adding subtle color up top while creating gentle, dappled shade below.
Azolla Carolinians (Water Velvet) Overview
Azolla is a favorite for aquarists who want a floating plant that’s both beautiful and functional. It spreads quickly when it’s happy, creating a living surface layer that helps your tank feel more like a real habitat—especially for fish that prefer overhead cover.
Aquarists appreciate Azolla Caroliniana for:
- Natural shade and security: a soft floating canopy that helps fish feel less exposed
- Fast nutrient uptake: absorbs excess nutrients from the water column as it grows
- Algae pressure reduction: by using available nutrients, it can make algae “compete harder”
- Great for fry and shrimp: the floating cover and micro-habitat encourage natural behavior
The real magic is how it changes the mood of a tank: Azolla turns a bright, open surface into a calm, shaded ceiling, and that often makes fish more confident and active in the midwater. It also adds top-down texture that “finishes” a planted aquarium from surface to substrate—especially when paired with hardscape and a natural base layer below.
Carring for Azolla Caroliniana
Azolla is adaptable and tolerant of a wide temperature range, making it suitable for many tropical aquariums, unheated setups, and even outdoor ponds (season and climate permitting). The key is giving it a surface environment it likes: gentle flow and a stable routine. Strong surface agitation can break it up or push it into corners, while calmer surfaces help it form that attractive, even mat.
Because it can grow quickly, plan to remove a handful periodically so it doesn’t completely block light to plants below. Many aquarists use a simple feeding ring or floating barrier to keep an open area for gas exchange and to prevent the mat from drifting into filter intakes.
Azolla feeds from the water column, so it benefits from consistent nutrients in the water. In planted tanks, a steady fertilizer routine can help it stay vibrant and growing evenly—just keep it balanced with your overall planting and lighting so the surface doesn’t overtake everything.
- Light: Moderate (brighter light can bring out red tones)
- Temperature Range: 59–82°F
- Placement: Floating
- CO₂: Not required
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Fast under good conditions
Because Azolla feeds entirely from the water column, a steady liquid plant fertilizer routine can make a noticeable difference in how fast it spreads and how vibrant it looks—especially in planted tanks where other plants are also competing for nutrients. An all-in-one fertilizer like Thrive helps keep growth consistent and prevents the plant from stalling out when nutrients get used up. Lighting matters too: under brighter, higher-quality light, Azolla tends to stay fuller and can develop more of those attractive reddish hues. A strong planted-tank light like the Fluval Plant Spectrum 4.0 Bluetooth 24/7 LED Aquarium Light is a great match for floaters because it provides even surface coverage and a stable day/night schedule, which helps Azolla grow more predictably while still supporting the plants below. Just remember to thin the mat as it expands so it doesn’t block too much light from reaching your midground and carpet plants.
If you love floaters, Azolla also pairs well with other surface plants we carry—like Red Root Floater or Salvinia—so you can mix textures and create a more varied, natural-looking canopy.

Good for pond type setups
Posted by Brenda on 19 Feb 2022I have this in betta tanks. The plant itself is thriving. Minus one star due to it sticking to everything. I do mean literally everything that comes in contact with the surface. So I wouldn't recommend this plant for regular fish tanks in which you need to clean often or rearrange the decor. Put your hand in the tank with these plants, it will come out looking like a swamp monster.

Super cool!
Posted by Saul m on 21 Jan 2021They lost all of their roots when I put them in water, so make sure to drop them in a bucket for a day at least in a bucket before adding them to a tank. After losing all the roots I was worried but they grew right back 2 days later!

Adorable
Posted by Rachel Bond on 7 Jul 2020I absolutely love these little floaters, they are so cute and dainty. I got the smallest cup and I recieved so much I didnt know what to do with it all. All is well because I love it. A lot of the roots came off the plants, in the tank so I would suggest a couple rounds of light rinsing (I did once) but the dead roots got filtered, no biggie. The plants are looking great regardless.

Lots and lots
Posted by Syd on 27 Jun 2020Wow! So glad I only ordered a small cup. I didn’t know what to do with it all. I’ve had quite a bit turn brown since being in the various tanks, thus the four star rating. Hoping it starts spreading.

Easy...
Posted by Jim S on 23 May 2020Easy to care for but grows like crazy. Also had some duckweed mixed and I think the snails hitchhiked on this. Not a big deal for me since they helped clean the tank.

Very good product
Posted by Ashley E Shrader on 28 Apr 2020The cup I got was jam packed with a lot of Azolla. I did see a few pcs of duckweed mixed in. I did split this up into 4 containers to make sure I find the best location and type of container for my application.
