Description

Cryptocoryne Wendtii Brown

Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Brown’ is a classic low-light Crypt from Sri Lanka that brings rich, earthy tones to planted aquariums. Depending on your lighting and tank conditions, the leaves can range from olive-green to bronze, brown, and reddish-brown—making it an easy way to add warmth and depth without relying on demanding red stem plants. It grows as a compact rosette and is especially useful for creating that natural “riverbank” look in the foreground and midground.

Cryptocoryne Wendtii ‘Brown’ Overview

Wendtii Brown is popular because it’s forgiving, adaptable, and looks great in groups. It’s one of those plants that quietly makes a tank look more mature as it settles in and thickens over time.

Aquarists appreciate Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Brown’ for:

  • Low-light tolerance: excellent for shaded areas and low-tech tanks
  • Warm bronze/brown tones: adds contrast against bright green plants
  • Compact rosette shape: perfect for foreground-to-midground layering
  • Natural grouping effect: looks best planted in small clusters that form fuller clumps

For aquascaping, plant Wendtii Brown in small groups around hardscape so it looks like it naturally “grew there.” Tuck it along the base of Seiryu Rock or into the pockets of Ohko Dragon Rock, or plant it at the foot of darker driftwood like Blackwood so the warmer leaf tones stand out subtly. If you want a more habitat-style finish, a light scatter of botanicals—like Aquatic Catappa Leaves—around the base helps create a realistic leaf-litter zone that Crypts naturally resemble.

Caring for Crypt Wendtii Brown

Like many Cryptocoryne species, Wendtii Brown may go through an adjustment period after shipping or when moved to a new aquarium. During this time, it can “melt” some older leaves. Don’t panic—under stable conditions it typically rebounds by pushing new growth from the crown.

This is a low-demand plant that does not require high light, CO₂, or specialized substrate, but it will grow fuller and faster with a nutrient-rich substrate or occasional root tabs placed near (not directly on) the plant. Plant it with the crown just above the substrate line, then avoid moving it around—Crypts usually do best when they’re allowed to settle and establish.

  • Light: Low
  • Temperature Range: 71–86°F
  • Placement: Foreground–Midground
  • CO₂: Not required (beneficial)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Growth Rate: Slow–Moderate

Once established, Wendtii Brown is a true “set it and enjoy it” plant. Maintenance is minimal—remove an older leaf if it declines, keep the area reasonably clean, and let the plant gradually thicken into a lush clump that makes the foreground and midground feel planted and natural.

Also available potted. We also carry many other Crypt varieties, including Cryptocoryne Wendtii Red, Cryptocoryne Beckettii, Cryptocoryne Parva, Cryptocoryne Lucens, Cryptocoryne Lutea, and more—making it easy to build a layered “Crypt forest” with different leaf sizes, shapes, and tones.

I may have manhandled these guys and I'm mad at myself. Kind of a novice but they came perfect and the people at Modern Aquarium know what they are doing. I hope they recover.

Had to place a second order of these plants. They are so wonderful in the tank, with their red tones and dark greens, playing quite well against the Saba wood and the dark substrate. Thank you, Modern Aquarium, for having great options for low tech nano tanks!

This is my second purchase of this plant. It had beautiful color and is thriving in my low-tech tank. I cannot say enough about the quality of all the plants I have purchased from Modern Aquarium. They have far exceeded my expectations, they are healthy and packaged with great care.

This brown cryptocoryne was really nice when I got it with the exception of two rotting leaves. The rest was healthy, though! I simply cut them at the stem and the two plants are doing swimmingly~ Overall, Modern Aquarium has great quality plants, and I won't let a couple of melty leaves deter me from placing another order.
