Duckweed (Lemna Minor)

Duckweed is one of the fastest-growing and most adaptable floating plants in the hobby. It’s excellent for soaking up excess nutrients, providing natural shade, and creating a more “pond-like” feel in both aquariums and outdoor tubs.

Duckweed Overview

Lemna minor, commonly known as duckweed, is a hardy, easy-going floating plant that produces tiny, oval leaves (fronds) measuring only a few millimeters across. We ship our duckweed in a 4 oz container or by the pound, giving you plenty of plant mass to get started.

On the water’s surface, duckweed forms a soft, clover-like mat of light green leaves. Delicate, root-like structures hang beneath each frond, swaying gently in the current. In an aquarium, this floating canopy:

  • Softens overhead lighting and creates natural shade
  • Helps shy fish, small fish, and fry feel more secure near the surface
  • Provides a habitat where fry and micro-organisms can thrive
  • Adds a simple but attractive “natural pond” look to open-top tanks and tubs

Duckweed reproduces rapidly through vegetative reproduction—each frond can produce new fronds that quickly spread across the surface. Under good conditions, a small starter portion can cover the surface of an average aquarium within a week.

Many fish, especially goldfish and koi, enjoy grazing on duckweed, and other species will appreciate the shade and cover it provides. Because of its fast growth and nutrient uptake, duckweed is particularly useful in tanks or tubs with a heavy biological load, where it helps absorb excess nutrients from the water column and can assist in keeping algae in check.

Caring for Duckweed

Duckweed is very easy to care for and thrives in a wide range of conditions. It does not require strong light, special substrate, or CO₂. However, because it grows quickly, some simple maintenance will keep it from taking over your tank.

  • Light: Moderate
  • Temperature Range: 41–95°F
  • Placement: Floating
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Growth Rate: Very fast

To manage duckweed, simply remove excess fronds during regular maintenance with a net or cup, leaving as much or as little coverage as you prefer. Keeping part of the surface open ensures good gas exchange and allows light to reach plants below. Duckweed can be used in a wide variety of setups—from temperate tanks and outdoor tubs to tropical community aquariums—thanks to the broad temperature range in which it thrives.

Duckweed also pairs nicely with other floating plants such as Water Lettuce and Red Root Floater, allowing you to create layered surface cover with different shapes, colors, and root structures.

Overall fairly happy with my order! First time ordering live plants online. The plant itself is very healthy and in good condition! But! It did come with Scuds… Thankfully i put it into a tank with noting in it. Still, very happy and will be ordering again!

    Duck weed

Duck weed is awesome for my pond. I have ravenous koi and I delve it out a bit at a time. I bought a pound and put most of it in a 9x13 pan with water. It lasts and lasts.

Love it or hate it, this stuff is awesome!

I added some of this to my 10gal with a betta and mystery snail. Having a problem with hair algae and this is my answer to help out. 4oz is way too much for a 10gal, but that’s ok. I’m very happy with my purchase. Plants came packed well, bright green, and didn’t smell as bad as I feared it might. If you’ve never worked with duckweed before you are in for a treat! And by “treat” I mean finding a humble compromise between your trying to control it and it defying your attempts to do so. It sticks to everything, your arms, tools, nets, and it will appear into other tanks if you have them, like magic. Do your best, it’ll still win. The sooner you get over it outsmarting you, the better. That way you can get to appreciate its power and what it brings to the table. Nitrite control, light control, algae control, nutrition, beauty. I highly recommend using some air tubing and suction cups to dam off areas for the fish to eat, breathe, and I dammed mine off around the bubble and filtered water return to prevent the filter getting clogged by duckweeds that got pushed underwater. Nice and easy and looks great!

    Beautiful and Lush!

Absolutely love the duckweed, they multiply so fast! But, not fast enough since the bettas keep eating them that I had to transfer them to a second tank so that I can keep up with the ravenous betta fish! They clearly love the duckweed! Very easy to grow, just plop in and the duckweed will go wild! :)

    DUCKWEED (LEMNA MINOR)
Posted by Ralph on 24 May 2022

Bought two 4 oz cups for a couple breeder tanks. i was surprised by the amount received. Both containers were filled with plants just as in the photo. i've had the duckweed a few weeks now, and it's made its way into all of my aquariums. This stuff seriously multiplies on a daily. This stuff is amazing at keep nitrite levels low. I'm harvesting the excess and using in the goldfish and koi ponds.

I ordered a pound of this and actually received a pound of plants, not water but actual duckweed. To make things even better it was very well packaged and healthy. I will definitely be buying from these guys again!
