Description

Hair Grass (Eleocharis Montevidensis)

Hair Grass (Eleocharis montevidensis) is a crisp, grass-like aquarium plant that brings a natural “riverbank meadow” feel to a planted tank. Instead of broad leaves, it grows as clusters of thin, green blades that sway in the current and add clean texture without looking busy. Native to the Americas and widely cultivated for aquariums, it’s a classic choice when you want movement, depth, and a more natural-looking layout.

Hair Grass (Eleocharis montevidensis) Overview

In most setups, E. montevidensis is best thought of as a midground-to-background grass (especially in smaller tanks), typically growing around 8–12 inches depending on conditions and maintenance.

Aquarists appreciate Hair Grass for:

  • Natural motion: fine blades that ripple with flow for a “wild meadow” look
  • Depth and perspective: great for creating layered planting behind stones/wood
  • Runner growth: spreads outward over time, thickening into larger stands
  • Habitat value: dense growth provides cover for shrimp, fry, and shy fish

In an aquascape, it looks especially sharp behind darker hardscape—think Blackwood, Stump Wood, or Tiger Wood—or tucked behind rock lines to soften hard edges and add height without the “wall of stems” effect.

Caring for Hair Grass (Eleocharis montevidensis)

Hair Grass is beginner-friendly, but it responds best when you give it two things: root nutrition and a clean growing area. Plant it in small groups/plugs (not one giant clump), spacing plugs a bit apart so light and flow reach the base. Over time, it will spread via runners; you can trim runners and replant sections to fill gaps or expand the stand.

A nutrient-rich planted substrate is ideal, but in sand or gravel you’ll see noticeably better results by adding root tabs (“nutrition capsules”) near the base of the planting. Keep the blades free of trapped debris: use gentle flow, avoid letting mulm blanket the base, and when you siphon, hover just above the grass rather than digging into the substrate (so you don’t uproot runners). Corydoras can help stir the surface layer, but newly planted plugs may need a little time to root before any energetic foraging.

  • Light: Moderate (brighter light + regular trimming keeps it tidier)
  • Temperature Range: ~60–77°F (tolerant; thrives in typical tropical ranges)
  • Placement: Midground–Background (foreground only in larger tanks or “meadow” layouts)
  • CO₂: Not required (beneficial for faster, denser growth)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; spreads via runners

Once Hair Grass is established, success is mostly about root support + keeping the base clean. Plant it in small plugs (not one big wad) so light and flow can reach the lower blades, and give it a nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tabs so it can build a strong runner network. As it grows taller, don’t be afraid to trim—light “haircuts” keep it looking tidy, prevent it from shading itself, and encourage a fuller stand instead of a sparse, leggy look. Because fine blades naturally trap mulm, a gentle routine of light siphoning above the grass line (rather than digging into it) and decent circulation will keep it crisp and green; once the planting has rooted well, bottom-dwellers like corydoras can help keep the area stirred, but the main win is simply consistent cleanliness and steady nutrition.

    Hair Grass

I was looking for something that would fill in the bottom of my tank and offer cover for newly hatched fry and chose the hair grass. it turns out it was a very good decision. After just 2 weeks the hair grass is really growing at a very fast rate. Most of the bunches have grown at least inches in about 2 weeks. Couldn't be happier.

These were the best bunches to date. Very healthy. Very bright green. Good root structure. Have seen new growth and expansion after just 4 days in our tank. Love them. About 8” tall. Great addition. I did not break the cluster down, but planted just as they came.
