Description
Jungle Red Vallisneria
Jungle Red Vallisneria is a beautiful Vallisneria variety known for its lively, slightly twisted ribbon-like leaves and the warm tones it can develop under stronger lighting. Native to North America, it typically grows in olive-to-medium green shades, but in brighter, well-fertilized aquariums it may take on subtle bronze or reddish hues that add depth and movement to the background. The result is a plant that feels both wild and refined—perfect for creating that “grown-in,” natural look that makes a tank feel established.
Jungle Red Vallisneria Overview
In the aquarium, Jungle Red Vallisneria forms clumps that send leaves upward in graceful arcs. It’s best used as a background or side-wall plant, where its flowing growth softens hard lines and adds a sense of scale. Because it spreads via runners, a small starter grouping can turn into a lush stand over time, helping you build a full, planted backdrop without constantly replanting.
Aquarists appreciate Jungle Red Vallisneria for:
- Constant motion and texture: Twisted, ribbon-like leaves add movement and a natural, riverbank feel.
- Fast, forgiving growth: Great for newer planted tanks and for filling in the background quickly.
- Easy propagation: Produces daughter plants on runners, making it simple to expand a patch.
- Fish-friendly cover: Dense stands create shelter, reduce stress, and encourage more natural behavior.
Planted in groups, it creates a layered “curtain” that looks especially good behind broader-leaf plants like Swords or as a framing element on the sides.
For aquascaping, Jungle Red Vallisneria shines when used to frame hardscape—tuck it behind rock formations or along driftwood lines like Tiger Wood or Driftwood on Slate to create depth and a natural transition from hardscape to open swimming space. It also pairs nicely with midground plants like Cryptocoryne, which can sit in front of the Vallisneria and create a clean, tiered look with contrasting leaf shapes. As the vallis thickens, fish will use it constantly as a background refuge and a “safe corridor,” especially in community tanks.
Caring for Jungle Red Vallisneria
Jungle Red Vallisneria is easy to keep and adapts well to most water conditions. With moderate lighting, it grows reliably, and under stronger light plus consistent fertilization it can develop richer coloration and faster growth. It typically reaches about 6–10 inches, though growth can vary based on tank conditions and trimming habits.
It feeds primarily from the substrate, so a nutrient-rich base helps—but it does well in standard gravel or sand when supported with occasional root tabs. If you want faster growth and better color, a steady liquid fertilizer routine can also help, especially in more heavily planted setups. Maintenance is simple: when leaves get too long or begin to shade other plants, trim older blades near the base and let the plant continue sending fresh growth. As it spreads via runners, you can leave daughter plants in place for a thick stand or transplant them to expand coverage elsewhere.
- Light: Moderate
- Temperature Range: 70–82°F
- Placement: Background (or sides)
- CO₂: Not required
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Fast under good conditions
Jungle Red Vallisneria looks best planted in groups along the back wall or sides of the aquarium because it’s at its most impressive when it creates a continuous ribbon-like stand rather than a few scattered blades. Start with a small cluster and give each crown a little breathing room; as it establishes, it will send runners and naturally knit itself into a thicker “curtain” that adds height, movement, and depth to the entire scape. That backdrop does more than just look good—it builds a calmer, more natural environment for your fish by creating sight breaks and sheltered lanes they’ll use all day, especially in community tanks where shy species appreciate a place to retreat without disappearing entirely. If you want a clean, intentional layout, use vallis to frame your hardscape (rocks and driftwood) and keep the center more open for swimming space; you’ll get a tank that feels bigger, more balanced, and more “finished” as the vallis fills in over time.

Very healthy, clean plants. Buying more!
Posted by RICHARD JOSEPH on 15 Apr 2024Shipping took a few extra days, but the plants still arrived healthy and alive. They were very clean, with only the slightest hint of algae on the leaf tips. They were planted in my deep substrate tank with no filter and no light except a sunny window. After a week, runners and new leaves began to grow. There was no melting, but the old leaves are now dying back as the new ones emerge. I ordered more for my other tank, and I will buy again from Modern Aquarium in the future.

Love this plant!
Posted by Debra Gadebusch on 27 Oct 2023It's been a couple of months since my order arrived. Very happy with this Jungle Red. I planted three bunches and all are doing very well on the side of my tank

Larger than expected!
Posted by Lauren on 18 May 2023My jungle red came in one bunch with five different leaves coming off of it. Each leaf was over a foot long, and needed to be trimmed before I put them into my tank. The leaves themselves were coated pretty heavily at the ends with algae from the supplier's stock tank. After a month, all five leaves have survived, are thriving, and a second jungle red plant has shot off of the original plant! Would definitely recommend for beginners and for your background.
