Description
Ludwiga Peruensis
A striking red stem plant, Ludwigia Peruensis is perfect for adding contrast, depth, and a bold splash of color to your aquascape, especially when planted in groups in the midground or background.
Ludwiga Peruensis Overview
Ludwigia Peruensis, commonly known in the hobby as Ludwigia glandulosa, originates from North America and is prized for its intense coloration and elegant growth habit. This variant produces small, spade-shaped leaves on upright stems, with colors ranging from olive-brown to deep, dark red depending on conditions.
In the aquarium, Ludwigia Peruensis looks especially impressive when planted in groups in the midground or background. Its colorful stems and foliage:
- Add bold red and burgundy contrast against green plants
- Create a dense, textured thicket that gives your scape depth
- Provide visual interest behind schooling fish like tetras and rasboras
- Help draw the eye to a specific area of the tank as a natural focal point
Under ideal conditions, with strong, consistent lighting and good nutrition, the plant develops intense red and burgundy tones that stand out beautifully and instantly elevate the look of your aquascape.
Ludwigia Peruensis is a classic choice for aquascapers looking to create a red accent in nature-style or Dutch-style layouts, or to frame hardscape elements such as rocks and driftwood.
Caring for Ludwiga Peruensis
If provided with proper care, Ludwigia Peruensis grows quickly and produces vibrant olive-green, pink, or red leaves. This plant appreciates good lighting, and the more intense and consistent the light, the more robust the growth and deeper the coloration you will see. While not absolutely necessary, regular fertilization—especially with iron-rich fertilizers—and stable water parameters will help it reach its full potential.
- Light: Medium–High (stronger light brings out more intense red coloration)
- Temperature Range: 72–82°F
- Placement: Midground–Background
- CO₂: Not required, but recommended for best color and compact growth
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under good conditions
Plant Ludwigia Peruensis as individual stems, spaced slightly apart, in the middle or back of the aquarium. Over time, the stems will grow upward, and regular trimming will help keep the plant compact and bushy. To propagate, simply cut healthy tops or side shoots and replant them in the substrate; they will quickly root and continue growing, allowing you to create thicker, more vibrant groups.

Ludwigia
Posted by Neno Albert on 14 Aug 2020These little guys took the shipping trip the worst out of my order. Fortunately, they were lush enough to take on a good trim of damaged leaves. There was minimal damage here and nothing outside of general upkeep to make it look great. It's been about a week and the plants are happily growing
