Description
Monte Carlo (Micranthemum tweediei) | 4 oz Cup
Monte Carlo (Micranthemum tweediei) is a popular carpeting plant from Argentina, loved for its small, round, light green leaves and its ability to form a lush, low carpet in the foreground of planted aquariums. With its delicate appearance and bright color, it’s an excellent choice for both nature-style aquascapes and clean, modern layouts.
Monte Carlo Overview
In the aquarium, Monte Carlo forms a dense mat of creeping stems covered in tiny, oval leaves. When conditions are right, it hugs the substrate and spreads outward, creating a soft, cushion-like carpet that flows over slopes, between rocks, and around driftwood. Although it can also be used as a low midground plant on mounds or hardscape, it truly shines as a foreground carpet.
In a planted aquarium, Monte Carlo is especially appreciated for:
- Compact, low-growing carpet: With proper light and nutrients, Monte Carlo spreads along the substrate, forming a dense, lawn-like mat that stays relatively low, giving the tank a professional, “finished” look.
- Delicate, bright texture: The tiny, round leaves provide a different texture from grasses and broader-leaf plants, adding fine detail and making layouts feel more intricate and carefully designed.
- Versatility in layouts: It can be used to cover flat areas, drape gently over sloped substrate, or grow between pieces of hardscape—such as Seiryu Stone, Ohko Dragon Rock, or driftwood—to create a natural, overgrown effect.
- Benefits for fish and invertebrates: A healthy Monte Carlo carpet offers excellent micro-habitats and hiding spots for shrimp, fry, and small bottom-dwelling fish, as well as additional surface area for beneficial bacteria.
Planted in small groups and given time to spread, Monte Carlo becomes a vivid green “ground layer” that ties the entire aquascape together and makes rocks, wood, and taller plants look more intentional and anchored.
Care Guide for Monte Carlo
Monte Carlo adapts well to a range of water parameters and is more forgiving than some other carpeting species, but it still appreciates good conditions if you want a dense, low carpet. It will tolerate varied temperatures, hardness, and pH, but it grows best under strong light and with access to sufficient nutrients in the substrate and water column.
Plant Monte Carlo in small portions rather than as one large clump. Gently separate the 4 oz cup into small plugs and plant them a short distance apart in the foreground or on shallow slopes. A nutrient-rich substrate—such as a planted-tank soil—combined with regular fertilization will encourage faster, thicker carpeting. Root tabs and a complete liquid fertilizer help ensure that both the roots and the leaves receive what they need to thrive.
While CO₂ supplementation is not strictly required, it makes a noticeable difference: with CO₂, Monte Carlo typically grows faster, stays lower, and forms a tighter, more compact carpet. If you are running CO₂, a stable system—such as our Fully Automated CO₂ System with pH & CO₂ Controller—helps maintain consistent levels, which in turn supports healthier, more predictable growth.
For planting and maintenance, using good tools makes a big difference. Our Modern Aquarium Aquascaping Tools is ideal here: straight tweezers allow you to plant tiny plugs deep and securely into the substrate without crushing them, while curved scissors are perfect for giving the carpet a gentle “haircut” when it starts to grow too tall. Regular pruning encourages horizontal growth and keeps the carpet dense and even.
Monte Carlo is also available potted and on coco fiber, which can make initial establishment even easier, especially if you want to drape it over hardscape or place it on top of mounds without disturbing the substrate too much.
- Light: Strong (will tolerate moderate, but carpets best under strong light)
- Temperature Range: 68–90°F
- Placement: Foreground, low Midground (especially on slopes and hardscape)
- CO₂: Not required, but strongly recommended for dense, compact carpeting
- Difficulty: Moderate (easier with CO₂ and good substrate)
- Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under good conditions
With proper light, nutrients, and occasional trimming, Monte Carlo will reward you with a bright, dense carpet that gives your aquascape a polished, high-end look.

Beautiful!
Posted by Kel on 24 Nov 2021It took me a long time to decide what type of plant I wanted to use as a carpet for my tank. I'm very glad I went with the Monte Carlo. The only problem I had with it was it was very hard to plant and keep it from floating, but it can be done with some patience. 2 containers was planty to fill my 10 gallon with.

Decent
Posted by Nojan on 21 Aug 2020My monte carlo came in a cup as described. I thought it would be a tissue culture but it's just a bunch of monte carlo scooped up and put in a cup, so there isn't much of a root structure to work with, you just have to press the plant into the soil and allow it to acclimate. The plants came back slightly dry due to the cup not being an air tight seal so I sprayed them with water immediately upon receipt. They were not very vibrant in color and had a slight yellow hue. It's been a week and the monte carlo is slowly regaining its bright green color and putting roots into the soil. They will be healthy, it was just a bit of a less than ideal start.
