Description
Radican Marble Queen Sword (Echinodorus Cordifolius)
Radican Marble Queen Sword (Echinodorus cordifolius) is a striking North American/Mexican sword plant known for its bold, variegated foliage and commanding presence in the aquarium. Its broad, heart-shaped green leaves are patterned with lighter and darker marbling, giving the plant a “painted” look that naturally draws the eye and makes it a standout feature in both simple and heavily planted tanks.
Radican Marble Queen Sword Overview
In the aquarium, Radican Marble Queen forms a robust rosette of large leaves that emerge from a central crown. The leaves are typically medium to bright green with creamy or darker green marbling, and as the plant matures, it can produce an impressive cluster of foliage that fills the midground or back areas of the tank. It is often used as a centerpiece or anchor plant around which other species are arranged.
Aquarists appreciate Radican Marble Queen Sword for:
- Striking marbled foliage: The broad leaves with lighter and darker markings create instant visual interest and contrast, especially against finer-leaf plants and darker hardscape.
- Focal-point presence: Its size and shape make it ideal as a primary specimen plant in the midground or as a transition into the background, giving the aquascape a strong structural anchor.
- Shelter and spawning surfaces: The large leaves provide excellent cover for shy fish and can serve as potential spawning or resting surfaces for species such as angelfish, discus, and other similar egg-layers.
- Robust, adaptable growth: This sword is undemanding and will grow well under a range of aquarium conditions, making it suitable for both newer hobbyists and experienced aquascapers looking for a reliable showpiece plant.
Planted prominently in the midground and framed with aquascaping rocks or driftwood (such as Tiger Wood or Driftwood on Slate), Radican Marble Queen Sword can become the “centerpiece” of your layout. It also pairs nicely with smaller sword species and foreground options like our Chain Sword Narrow Leaf or Chain Sword Broad Leaf, and you can explore our dedicated Sword Plants category to build a cohesive Echinodorus-themed scape.
Care Guide for Radican Sword
Radican Marble Queen Sword is relatively forgiving and will adapt to a variety of water conditions, but it shows its best color and size when given moderate or better lighting and access to rich nutrients at the roots. A nutrient-dense substrate—such as Fluval Stratum or a similar planted-tank base—combined with regular fertilization will help the plant produce larger, more vibrant leaves with strong marbling.
Like most sword plants, Echinodorus cordifolius is a heavy root feeder and benefits from root tabs or substrate fertilizers, especially in plain gravel or sand setups. Iron-rich fertilizers are particularly helpful; if you notice pale or yellowing leaves, adding an iron supplement such as Elemental Liquid Iron Plant Fertilizer can improve color and overall vigor. CO₂ supplementation is not required, but in brighter, higher-energy tanks it can support faster, fuller growth.
The plant should be placed in the midground of medium tanks or used as a background specimen in smaller ones, where its height and broad leaves can fill vertical space. Over time, Radican Marble Queen may produce tall leaves that approach the surface; if you want to keep it more compact and tidy, periodically remove the largest or oldest leaves at the base using sharp aquascaping scissors. This encourages new growth from the crown and helps maintain a neat, bushy appearance.
Radican Marble Queen Sword is also available potted, which can make initial planting easier and help the plant establish more quickly as the root system is already well-developed.
- Light: Moderate–Strong
- Temperature Range: 71–82°F
- Placement: Midground (or background in smaller aquariums)
- CO₂: Not required (beneficial in brighter setups)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under good conditions
With proper substrate, lighting, and occasional pruning, Radican Marble Queen Sword will reward you with bold, marbled leaves and a commanding presence that helps define your aquascape.
