Description

Red Root Floater (Phyllanthus Fluitans) | 4 Oz Cup

A colorful, fast-growing floating plant, Red Root Floater is ideal for softening harsh lighting, creating natural shade, and adding a pop of red to your aquarium’s surface.

Red Root Floater Overview

Red Root Floater (Phyllanthus fluitans) is a South American floating plant prized for its compact, lettuce-like leaves and striking red roots. The leaves form small rosettes that can range from light green to deep red, especially under stronger lighting. As the plant multiplies, it creates a soft, dappled canopy on the water’s surface.

In the aquarium, Red Root Floater is excellent for:

  • Absorbing excess nutrients and helping to control algae
  • Providing shade and cover for shy or surface-oriented fish such as bettas, gouramis, guppies, and other livebearers
  • Creating a safe overhead “ceiling” for nano fish, fry, and shrimp, helping them feel more secure and encouraging more natural behavior
  • Adding visual interest with its contrasting green leaves and crimson roots

Many fish and invertebrates instinctively gravitate toward the protection this plant provides. Bettas and gouramis enjoy resting under the floating leaves, livebearer fry use the root mass as a hiding place, and shrimp will constantly graze on the biofilm that forms around the roots.

Because it floats freely, you can easily move or thin the mat as needed. Propagation is simple: healthy plants naturally produce new daughter plants that break off and spread across the surface.

Caring for Red Root Floater

Under good conditions, this plant displays vivid coloration, with bright red roots and undersides that contrast beautifully with the green tops of the leaves. It does not require intense light to survive, but stronger lighting will bring out deeper red tones.

  • Light: Moderate to High (higher light encourages red coloration)
  • Temperature Range: 70–86°F
  • Placement: Floating
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Growth Rate: Fast

To introduce Red Root Floater, simply place the 4 oz cup contents on the water’s surface. Allow the plants to adjust, avoid strong surface agitation that can flip or sink the leaves, and they will quickly begin to spread. Periodic thinning will keep them from completely covering the surface and blocking too much light from plants below.

Very nice but become vulnerable to entangling with other plants
Posted by ROBERT THILL on 1 Jan 2026

I had a similar experience to another reviewer. These are very nice but become vulnerable to entangling with other plants. A lot of mine died because of fragility, especially when there were disturbances, like water changes and the like.

    For My Baby Snapping Turtle
Posted by WONDERFUL FEEDER PLANTS on 4 Sep 2025

These plants seem to be a solid favorite for my baby common snapping turtle. I always find floating leaves with the roots munched away. It is consistently a go to food source for my baby snapper and am ordering more. They actually last a long time if stored in another container with some water so I've got through them and not had to worry about them dying off too early.

    Healthy

I bought 2 of the 4 ounce cups and was worried about the quality due to not having many roots. Instead of jumping to conclusions, I put them in the tank and gave it time before writing a review. Glad I did. Those two cups multiplied quickly enough that my 55 gallon top (48x13) is now covered to the point where I'm already having to remove due to overcrowding. Only took a month. And the long red roots are coming in beautifully underneath. They haven't quite turned their red color, but I know there are other factors that need to come into play before this happens. They are blooming with little white flowers, though. Either way, if you're looking for a great canopy that your fish and shrimp are going to love, get you a cup or two of these and let'em go. Highly recommend.

Red Root Floater and all the others too
Posted by SHAWN SHEPHERD on 1 Jul 2025

At first I thought I had been sent a bowl of Brussel Sprouts. But then the fern warmed up and I had a beautiful "sea" of green on top of the water. All the plants were packed with great care with plenty of room so they were not all smooshed up like my prior vendor! I will definitely be a repeat customer of Modern Aquarium in the future! I'd be a fool not to be!

Mine were just okay. They were in the worst condition in the shipment of nine plants. Not bad, but somewhat dried out and unhappy. They're doing well now though.

Came with many, but losing quite a few!
Posted by Lauren on 18 May 2023

My 4 oz cup came packed full of red root floater plants! However, as a month has passed, I have lost quite a bit of my floaters. They're very pretty, but the roots can get tangled easily in taller plants as my filter pushes them around in the water quite a bit.

    Red root floaters
Posted by Donna Piunt on 26 Nov 2022

I’m new to aquascaping so after much research of fast growing floating plants I discovered I couldn’t find any locally. I discovered many aquarium online plant stores but chose Modern Aquarium because their reviews were so incredible. I ordered red root floaters and received incredibly healthy amount of them. I loved them so much I ordered more. I am excitedly waiting to receive a big order of live plants in the next day or so. I can’t say enough about their amazing live plants and their wonderful service. Thank you Modern Aquarium!

The plants were very healthy!! There were a couple of dead leaves in the cup but very few. And they were packed in there pretty well so you get plenty in one cup. My shrimp and betta fish like hanging out in the roots.
