Description
Temple Plant (Hygrophila Corymbosa) | Potted
Temple Plant is one of those classic stem plants that can quickly make an aquarium look full, structured, and intentionally planted. Native to parts of India and Indonesia, Hygrophila corymbosa grows with sturdy stems and rigid, broad leaves that give it a clean, architectural look—almost like a terrestrial hedge, but underwater. It’s especially useful when you want a dependable background plant that grows with confidence, tolerates a range of conditions, and responds well to trimming.
Temple Plant (Hygrophila Corymbosa) Overview
In an aquascape, Temple Plant is a true background workhorse. It adds vertical mass, creates a solid green “wall” behind hardscape, and gives your layout a sense of height and depth. Because it’s easy to shape, you can keep it tight and bushy for a clean, planted look or let it grow taller for a more natural, jungle-style background.
If you want a fast, adaptable plant that helps your tank look established quickly, Temple Plant is an excellent choice:
- Builds a lush background with strong stems and broad leaves
- Highly adaptable—tolerates a wide range of water conditions
- Fast growth helps fill space and absorb excess nutrients
- Easy to manage—trim and replant cuttings to thicken the group
- Great for corners and edges to create a clean, structured backdrop
With consistent trimming and smart grouping, Temple Plant becomes a reliable “framework” plant—adding structure, height, and a polished background that makes the rest of the aquascape stand out.
Caring for Temple Plant (Hygrophila Corymbosa)
Temple Plant is popular for a reason: it’s tough, forgiving, and fast once established. It does best in moderate to high light, and it responds well to a steady nutrient routine. While it can grow in simpler setups, you’ll see the strongest, most robust growth when it has access to nutrients both at the roots and in the water column. A nutrient-friendly substrate is helpful, and a consistent liquid fertilizer routine supports fuller leaves and thicker stems over time.
Plant it in the background, ideally in small groups, and leave some space between stems so light and flow can reach the lower portions. As it grows, trimming the tops encourages the plant to branch and become bushier; you can also replant the healthy tops to create a denser stand. Temple Plant can tolerate cooler water compared with many tropical stems, which makes it a flexible option for a variety of community tanks.
- Light: Moderate to High
- Temperature Range: 68–78°F
- Placement: Background
- CO₂: Not required (optional for faster, denser growth)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Fast
With moderate–high light, steady nutrients, and occasional pruning, Temple Plant becomes the kind of background stem that practically maintains itself. A simple routine of liquid fertilizer (and, if you’re in inert substrate, occasional root tabs) will keep growth strong and leaves full, while regular trimming prevents it from shading itself and helps it stay dense and bushy instead of tall and sparse. In other words: give it consistency, trim with intention, and Temple Plant will reward you with a clean, vibrant green backdrop that makes the entire aquascape feel bigger, fuller, and more finished.
Why Choose the Potted Version
Choosing the potted version is a great option if you want a cleaner, more stable start—especially for stem plants you plan to group and shape. Because the plant has been grown and maintained in its pot, it typically arrives with a more established base and healthier initial structure, which can make planting easier and reduce floaters during the first week or two.
You can place the pot directly into the substrate temporarily for a simple install, or remove the plant from the pot and separate it into individual stems to create a more natural, well-spaced background grouping. Many aquascapers like potted stems because they’re easier to handle, easier to position, and give you a more predictable starting point as you dial in light and nutrients.

beautiful
Posted by TWynnB on 8 Jun 2021This was stuck with fedex 5 days extra, and still arrived beautifully. It was three separate stems (is that normal?) with nice roots and numerous healthy leaves. Beautiful!
