Description
Anubias Heterophylla Lanceolata
Anubias Heterophylla Lanceolata is a hardy, elegant Anubias variety known for its long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves. Native to West Africa, this plant brings a more vertical and refined look than many rounder-leaf Anubias types, making it a great choice when you want sturdy greenery with a little extra height and shape. The leaves may look slender and graceful, but they are still thick, durable, and well-suited for real-world community aquariums.
Anubias Heterophylla Lanceolata Overview
Anubias Lanceolata is especially useful when you want the easy-care benefits of Anubias but with a taller, more flowing leaf form. It can work beautifully in the midground or background, where its elongated leaves create structure without the constant trimming required by fast-growing stem plants.
Aquarists appreciate Anubias Heterophylla Lanceolata for:
- Long, lance-shaped leaves: Adds a graceful, unusual shape to the aquascape.
- Excellent hardiness: A tough, adaptable plant that does well in most freshwater setups.
- Low-maintenance growth: No CO₂, high light, or specialty substrate required.
- Fish-resistant durability: Thick leaves hold up well with active or boisterous fish.
- Hardscape versatility: Can be attached to rocks, driftwood, or placed with roots in the substrate as long as the rhizome stays exposed.
This is a great plant for aquarists who want dependable greenery that does not need constant attention. Its taller, slender leaves make it useful behind shorter Anubias, Cryptocoryne, or compact midground plants, helping create a layered look with different leaf sizes and textures. If you enjoy Anubias plants, this variety is also a nice way to expand beyond the more common broad-leaf forms and build a fuller Anubias-focused layout.
For aquascaping, Anubias Lanceolata looks especially good attached to driftwood or positioned around rockwork where the leaves can rise naturally from the hardscape. Try it near Seiryu Rock or Japanese Ohko Dragon Rock for contrast, or place it beside darker wood like Blackwood or Saba Wood so the green leaves stand out clearly. It can also be paired with other Anubias varieties from Modern Aquarium’s Anubias plant category to create a low-maintenance, hardscape-based aquascape with multiple leaf shapes and heights.
Care Guide for Anubias Lanceolata
Anubias Heterophylla Lanceolata is a highly adaptable and undemanding aquarium plant. Lighting and water parameters are not especially difficult to manage, and the plant will grow well in most stable freshwater aquariums. Like all Anubias, it grows from a rhizome, which is the thick horizontal stem at the base of the plant. The most important care rule is simple: do not bury the rhizome. If the rhizome is covered by substrate, it can rot and the plant may decline.
You can attach Anubias Lanceolata to hardscape such as rocks, driftwood, or aquarium decorations using thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe gel. You can also place the roots into the substrate for a planted look, but the rhizome must remain above the substrate line. Because it grows slowly, it does not need frequent trimming; simply remove older or damaged leaves at the base when needed.
- Light: Low–Moderate
- Temperature Range: 68–82°F
- Placement: Midground–Background
- CO₂: Not required
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Slow
Once established, Anubias Lanceolata is very low maintenance. Give it a stable spot, gentle water movement, and moderate lighting, and it will slowly develop into a durable, long-lasting plant. Because slow-growing leaves can collect algae under overly intense light, avoid placing it directly under excessive lighting for long periods. If algae becomes a concern, nerite snails are excellent algae grazers, and mystery snails can help with general cleanup and leftover organics that contribute to algae pressure.
Anubias Lanceolata is also available potted.
