It comes in golden to brown color and in many different shapes but is generally characterized by intertwining roots branching out from a central location, giving it the appearance of tree branches. It releases tannins but in relatively small quantities and will get waterlogged in just a few days. It looks great on its own or in groups and is perfect for attaching mosses and ferns.
