Description
Baby Tears on Lava Rock
Baby Tears is a bright, fine-textured plant with small, thick, oval leaves that create a lush “micro-green” look in the aquarium. Native to West Africa, it’s loved for the way its vivid green color pops against darker backgrounds, stone, and driftwood—instantly making a tank look fresher, more detailed, and more “finished.” Mounted on porous lava rock, Baby Tears becomes an easy, ready-to-place accent piece that adds natural texture without the fuss of delicate planting.
Baby Tears Overview
This product combines two aquascaping favorites: a living carpet-style plant and a rugged, lightweight hardscape base. The lava rock provides natural texture and plenty of crevices for roots to grab, while the Baby Tears forms a dense, bright mound that can be used as a foreground highlight or a midground transition. It’s ideal for aquarists who want the look of a planted foreground without having to start from bare stems—just place it where you want it, and let it settle in.
Aquarists appreciate Baby Tears on Lava Rock for:
- Instant visual impact: Bright green leaves create sharp contrast against rock, wood, and darker substrates.
- Easy placement and flexibility: Move it during layout changes or maintenance without uprooting a planted carpet.
- Natural texture and scale: The small leaves add fine detail that makes an aquascape feel more realistic.
- Great for “building layers”: Perfect for creating a stepped foreground-to-midground look around hardscape.
Used thoughtfully, it can help tie your hardscape together and add a planted look even in open areas. For aquascaping, Baby Tears on Lava Rock looks especially clean nestled beside stonework or at the base of driftwood—pair it with bold textures like Tiger Wood or Driftwood on Slate to make the bright green foliage stand out even more. It also works beautifully as a transition between larger-leaf plants (such as Anubias or swords) and finer foreground areas, helping the layout feel layered and intentional rather than abrupt. If you’d like to expand the look, Modern Aquarium also offers individual lava rocks for sale, making it easy to build out a cohesive hardscape—whether that’s a rock border, terraces, caves, or a full lava-based layout—and then echo that structure by placing additional planted lava pieces throughout the aquarium for a unified, natural appearance.
Caring for Baby Tears
Baby Tears tolerates a wide range of water conditions, but it looks its best when given stable, “plant-forward” conditions: moderate-to-strong light, consistent nutrition, and good circulation. Because it’s a small-leaf plant, better light and fertilization typically produce tighter, more compact growth and stronger color.
For best results try placing it in open areas with clear access to light, especially in the foreground or midground where it won’t be shaded by taller plants. Support growth with a reliable fertilization routine. Baby Tears will respond well to liquid fertilizers, and in higher-light tanks, consistent nutrients become more important to keep it dense and healthy. Keep it looking crisp with regular pruning. Trim the top growth with sharp aquascaping scissors to maintain a short, compact shape and prevent the plant from getting leggy.
Because it’s attached to lava rock, you can easily reposition it as your aquascape evolves—no uprooting, no disturbed substrate, and no messy replanting.
- Light: Moderate–Strong
- Temperature Range: 68–82°F
- Placement: Foreground, Midground
- CO₂: Not required (beneficial in higher light)
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Growth Rate: Moderate (faster under stronger conditions)
If you like the look of Baby Tears but want a different way to place it in your layout, Dwarf Baby Tears is also available on coco fiber—a great option when you’re aiming for flatter “carpet patches,” edging around stones, or filling in small open areas without committing to a full planted carpet right away. Many aquascapers will mix both formats in the same tank: use Baby Tears on Lava Rock as rugged, movable accents you can tuck into crevices and terraces (and even expand the hardscape with our individual lava rocks for a cohesive volcanic theme), then use the coco fiber version to soften transitions and create that smooth, low foreground texture. Whichever route you take, the best long-term routine is simple: keep nutrients steady with a quality liquid fertilizer, and do quick “maintenance trims” with sharp aquascaping scissors to keep the growth compact and cushiony (tweezers help you tidy loose bits and reposition pieces cleanly). And because these are live plants, they’re typically shipped via FedEx 2-Day under our live-plant shipping schedule to help them arrive in great shape.

Lovely but shape of rock with the edge of the plant began to gather a lot of debris
Posted by ROBERT THILL on 1 Jan 2026These are a lovely color. One caveat is that they seemed to trap a lot of debris between the plans and the rock. I ended up taking the plant off the rock and using it as a floating plant, which is not recommended. However, it looks very nice and has lived for months.
