Description
Cardinal Plant (Scarlet Lobelia)
Cardinal Plant, also known as Scarlet Lobelia or Cardinal Flower, is a striking North American species that brings a refined, almost “garden-like” look into the aquarium. Its broad, sturdy leaves and subtle red-purple tones make it a beautiful midground focal point that also provides real benefits for fish and shrimp.
Cardinal Plant Overview
In its natural range, Cardinal Plant is often found along the edges of streams and wetlands. Submerged in the aquarium, it forms compact, upright stems with thick, oval leaves. Depending on lighting and nutrients, you may see:
- Light to medium green leaves on both sides under more moderate lighting
- Deep scarlet-red to purple tones on the undersides with darker green upper leaves under stronger light and good nutrition
- A rich, layered look when planted in small groups, forming a low hedge or midground cluster that gives small fish and shrimp shaded areas to explore and forage
- Gentle cover and line-of-sight breaks that help shy fish, fry, and invertebrates feel more secure in a planted aquarium
Cardinal Plant works especially well as a midground focal plant or in the foreground of taller backgrounds like Italian Vallisneria or Amazon Sword. The broad leaves contrast nicely with fine-leaf stems, grasses, and mosses, adding structure and variety to your aquascape.
Shrimp and other invertebrates also appreciate this plant: its sturdy leaves and stems collect biofilm and tiny particles over time, creating natural grazing surfaces that they will pick at throughout the day.
Care Guide for Cardinal Plant
Cardinal Plant is undemanding and fairly hardy once established. It adapts to a wide range of aquarium conditions and does not require CO₂ injection to survive, though, like many plants, it will respond positively to stable water parameters, adequate lighting, and a nutrient-rich substrate.
- Light: Moderate (stronger light can bring out deeper coloration)
- Temperature Range: 70–82°F
- Placement: Midground / low focal point (can also work in the foreground of larger tanks)
- CO₂: Not required, but beneficial for more compact, robust growth
- Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
- Growth Rate: Slow to moderate
Plant individual stems or small clumps in the midground or toward the front-middle of the aquarium, leaving space for each plant to fill out. A nutrient-rich substrate or the use of root tabs will help maintain good color, leaf thickness, and overall vigor over time.
Cardinal Plant is also available potted, which can make initial planting easier and help the plant establish more quickly once introduced into your aquarium. Potted specimens typically arrive with a more developed root system, making them less prone to transplant shock and less likely to be uprooted by active fish, shrimp, or stronger water flow.
Routine maintenance is simple: remove any older or damaged leaves and trim back taller stems if they begin to shade neighboring plants. Healthy tops can be replanted to refresh groupings and maintain a compact, bushy appearance. Because of its slower growth, Cardinal Plant is also a nice complement to faster-growing stems, helping to balance the look of the aquascape.

Posted by Glenn Starner-Tate on 1 Oct 2021And this was added for color - other than green - in my planted aquarium. I'm a newbie to plants and so far everything is perfect. This was another great addition.

Posted by Steve Minnick on 14 Sep 2021The plant arrived in great shape! I was very pleased to see how healthy the plant was. After soaking it in room temperature for over 24 hours, I planted it in my aquarium. I hope it likes it’s new home.

Love the Purple!!
Posted by Micah A Alden on 13 Sep 2021These came in great condition despite the delay from FedEx. The one piece I was able to take the top off and it rooted itself within days and all pieces are really healthy and growing in quickly. Great mid ground plant for my tank.

Cardinal Plant
Posted by William Marrero on 6 Aug 2021Simply beautiful! Cardinal came in healthy and with vibrant colors. Didn't know which way to plant in substrate so stretched it out a bit and put a lead spike to hold in place and it's roots are going down into the substrate. Colors have faded a little but I don't have enough light so I'll be cranking up the light slowly. Just happy!
