Description
Contortion Val (Vallisneria Asiatica)
Contortion Val, also known as corkscrew Vallisneria, is a distinctive background plant from Japan that brings movement and texture to planted aquariums. Its tightly twisted, light green leaves form graceful vertical ribbons that sway in the current and give your tank an instant “underwater meadow” look.
Contortion Val Overview
In the aquarium, Vallisneria asiatica grows as a rosette plant, sending up narrow, spiraling leaves from a strong root system. As it matures, Contortion Val can grow quite tall, often reaching toward the surface in medium to larger aquariums. In a planted layout, it is especially appreciated for:
- Twisted, corkscrew foliage: The tightly spiraled, bright green leaves create a unique visual effect that sets it apart from straight-bladed Vallisneria, adding texture and movement to the background.
- Impact in groups: Planted in close clusters of 6–10 bunches (or more), Contortion Val forms a dense, flowing backdrop that frames the aquascape and makes midground and foreground plants stand out.
- Shelter and security: The tall, ribbon-like leaves provide excellent cover for fish, fry, and invertebrates, breaking up lines of sight and helping shy species feel more confident.
When used along the back or sides of the aquarium, Contortion Val softens hardscape lines and equipment while creating a natural, rivergrass look. It also pairs beautifully with other Vallisneria species from our dedicated Vallisneria Category—such as Jungle Val and Red Jungle Val—so you can mix different heights and leaf shapes for a layered, flowing background. In front of that, foreground plants like Dwarf Sagittaria or Dwarf Hairgrass and midground rosettes such as Cryptocorynes look fantastic, with the twisted leaves of Contortion Val forming a lively green curtain behind rocks and driftwood.
Care Guide for Contortion Val
Contortion Val is hardy and highly adaptable, making it a great choice for both beginners and experienced aquascapers. It will grow well in a wide range of water conditions and does not require intense lighting to thrive, although it will appreciate moderate to somewhat stronger light for more vigorous growth.
Plant Contortion Val in a fine gravel or nutrient-rich substrate to help it acclimate quickly and establish a robust root system. Once settled, it sends out runners that produce new plants, eventually forming a thick stand along the back of the tank. Its strong roots hold firmly in the substrate, making it a good option even in aquariums with active, bottom-dwelling fish that like to explore or sift the substrate.
While CO₂ supplementation is not required, providing a nutrient-rich base (such as Fluval Stratum or similar planted-tank substrates) and regular fertilization will support faster, healthier growth. Occasional trimming of the tallest leaves can keep the background tidy and prevent excessive shading of plants below.
- Light: Moderate (tolerates a range; grows stronger with better light)
- Temperature Range: 70–82°F
- Placement: Background
- CO₂: Not required
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under good conditions
This corkscrew Vallisneria propagates readily through runners. Allow new plantlets to establish around the parent plant, or gently separate and replant them along the back and sides of the aquarium to extend your “val wall.”

Nice Background plant
Posted by Lee Matherly on 17 Aug 2022These plants arrived with a little brown started. I got them in the tank as fast as I could. They will come back in full I am sure. A dose of thrive fertilizer and we should be back to good. The fish love them and they make the tank look very natural. Highly recommended company.

Vallisneria Asiatica
Posted by Bob on 3 Apr 2022Arrived quickly but the tips of most of the leaves had already started to melt. The roots were very healthy though and as soon as I saw new growth I cut back the old leaves and their growth has taken off.
