Description

Cryptocoryne Wendtii Green

Cryptocoryne Wendtii ‘Green’ is a classic Sri Lankan Crypt that earns its reputation as one of the easiest, most dependable plants in the hobby. It forms compact rosettes of gently textured leaves that bring a natural, established look to planted aquariums—especially in the foreground and midground. While it’s called “Green,” its color can shift depending on conditions, ranging from bright to deep green and sometimes showing subtle bronze or brownish tones under different lighting and nutrient levels.

Cryptocoryne Wendtii ‘Green’ Overview

In the aquarium, Wendtii Green grows as a low-to-medium rosette plant that slowly forms thick clumps over time. Its leaf shape is broader and more substantial than many stem plants, which makes it especially useful for adding variety and “leaf mass” to a scape. Because it tolerates shade so well, it’s a perfect choice for filling in areas beneath taller plants or alongside hardscape where other species may struggle.

Aquarists appreciate Cryptocoryne Wendtii ‘Green’ for:

  • Hardy, low-light performance: Thrives even in low light and shaded areas, including spots under driftwood, rocks, and taller background plants.
  • Natural-looking midground structure: Creates a clean, bushy clump that adds depth and makes a planted layout look mature and established.
  • Easy compatibility: Works in a wide range of tank setups and does not require CO₂ or intense lighting to grow reliably.
  • Great aquascaping contrast: Its broader, textured leaves contrast beautifully against fine-leaf stems, grasses, and carpeting plants.

Wendtii Green looks especially good planted in small groups around hardscape. Tuck it along the base of aquascaping rocks or driftwood to create a natural “riverbank” feel, then layer taller plants behind it for a clean transition from foreground to background.

Cryptocoryne Wendtii Green is also available potted, which can be a convenient option for planting and initial placement.

Caring for Cryptocoryne Wendtii ‘Green’

Like most Cryptocorynes, Wendtii Green may need a bit of time to acclimate after being moved. During this adjustment period, it’s normal for older leaves to soften, yellow, or melt back—often referred to as “crypt melt.” This is common and not a sign that the plant is failing. The best approach is to keep conditions stable, remove decaying leaves, and give the plant time; new leaves typically emerge from the crown once it has adapted to your aquarium.

Wendtii Green grows well in low light and does not require CO₂ supplementation or specialized substrate. That said, it will become fuller, bushier, and more robust when planted in a nutrient-rich substrate such as Fluval Stratum or Rio Escuro, or when supplemented with root tabs. Once established, it spreads slowly by runners and shoots, forming a dense clump that can be left in place for a long-term, low-maintenance aquascape.

  • Light: Low–Moderate
  • Temperature Range: 71–86°F
  • Placement: Foreground–Midground (can work as a low background in smaller tanks)
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Difficulty: Easy (once established)
  • Growth Rate: Slow–Moderate

If you want the healthiest, thickest growth, focus on stability—steady lighting, consistent fertilization, and minimal replanting. Crypts reward patience.

It’s understated, incredibly hardy, and one of the best ways to make a planted aquarium look natural and established. For an even more authentic “forest stream” vibe, consider pairing your Crypt thicket with natural botanicals like catappa (Indian almond) leaves, which can add gentle tannins, encourage biofilm, and help create that warm, lived-in look many aquarists love—especially when combined with driftwood and a darker substrate.

    Beautiful Plant
Posted by Trevor Samaroo on 11 Jun 2023

Ordered two and both arrived in excellent condition. These are very beautiful foreground plants (sorry I didn't order more). So far it's been about one week and they seem to be doing well: no leaf dropping nor browning.

    Plants thriving
Posted by Amber Mangum on 7 Dec 2022

I bought 3 of these for my 25 gal low tech tank with low level lighting, and they are thriving. I have had them for a week now, and they have each already put out 2 new baby leaves. One of them is already growing another plant from its roots. The plants arrived in excellent condition with no damage to the stems or the leaves. They took immediately to my tank with no melting. My fish love them.
