Description
Java Moss (Vesicularia Dubyana)
A truly versatile classic, Java Moss is one of the easiest and most useful aquarium plants you can own. It’s perfect for creating lush, natural-looking scapes and provides outstanding cover and grazing surfaces for shrimp, small fish, and especially fry.
Java Moss Overview
Vesicularia dubyana, commonly known as Java Moss, is a hardy, adaptable moss native to tropical Asia. It forms fine, branching fronds that grow into a soft, green mat and will happily attach itself to almost any surface in the aquarium.
In the aquarium, Java Moss can be used in a variety of ways. It can be:
- Tied to driftwood, rocks, or branches to create a natural, “forest” look
- Spread over mesh or décor to form moss walls, trees, or carpets
- Left free-form in breeding tanks to create dense, protective thickets
Java Moss uses tiny rhizoids to anchor itself to hard surfaces like rocks, driftwood, or décor. Because it has no true roots and does not burrow into the substrate, it absorbs nutrients directly from the water column. In doing so, it helps take up excess nutrients and contributes to a healthier, more stable environment.
This plant is especially valuable in aquariums housing fry and small fish. Its dense growth provides hiding places that help protect young fish from predation, and the fine fronds collect biofilm and microorganisms that fry and invertebrates will graze on throughout the day.
Care Guide for Java Moss
Java Moss is one of the least demanding aquatic plants in the hobby. It tolerates a wide range of water conditions, grows well in low light, and does not require CO₂ or fertilizer to survive. However, if provided with more intense light and occasional fertilization, it will grow faster and develop a thicker, more vibrant mat.
- Light: Low–Moderate (stronger light encourages faster, denser growth)
- Temperature Range: 59–86°F (suitable for both tropical and many cool-water setups)
- Placement: Foreground, hardscape, specimen, breeding/fry areas
- CO₂: Not required
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Slow to moderate (faster with good light and nutrients)
You can let Java Moss grow freely over the bottom or décor, or you can tie it to wood, rocks, or mesh using cotton thread, fishing line, or aquascaping glue. Over time, it will attach on its own and begin to spread in all directions. Java Moss looks particularly attractive when tied to branches or driftwood, where it creates the impression of miniature trees or overgrown roots.
Because it can trap fine debris, occasional gentle maintenance helps keep it looking its best. Lightly swishing or gently vacuuming around the moss during water changes will remove trapped detritus without damaging the plant.

Very pretty plant
Posted by Sarit on 31 Mar 2020I got very healthy looking plants. The only problem I have with them is that you really need to fix them to the location you want them to grow. otherwise, they'll swim all over the place. I wish they came in a mat or on a rock/driftwood. Also, if you want them fixed on rocks and driftwood, I recommend buying the larger amounts. in general, I am very happy with this shop.
