Description

Melon Sword (Echinodorus Osiris) | Potted

Echinodorus Osiris, also known as Melon Sword, E. Osiris Rubra, or E. Aureobrunata, originates from Brazil. It is a beautiful and visually impactful plant in the aquarium. This sword plant produces large green leaves with slightly ruffled edges and clearly visible veins.

Caring for Melon Sword

Caring for Melon Sword is not difficult as it is an undemanding plant. It should do well in most aquarium environments. Like most other sword plants, Melon Sword likes good light, substrate, and fertilization. If planted in an iron-rich substrate or provided with a good source of iron (e.g. Liquid Iron Fertilizer), Melon Sword will produce larger leaves and stems which will be more intensely red in color. Because Melon Sword is a heavy root feeder plant, we recommend placing root caps in the substrate around the plant.

  • Minimum Lighting Required: Moderate
  • Temperature Range: 70-82°F
  • Tank Placement: Midground - Background

Because of its size, Melon Sword can be used as a focal plant in the aquarium. It should be planted in the midground or background areas of the aquarium. It can also be used to “cover” aquarium equipment such as aquarium heaters or filter intakes. Many fish love to swim among the leaves of this sword plant while others, like Discus Fish and Angelfish, will even lay their eggs on them.

We also offer Melon Sword bareroot, and many other varieties of sword plants, including Amazon Sword, Red Melon Sword, and Red Flame Sword.

I needed a good background plant that wasn’t too big for my small plated tank and this worked out great!
