Description

Rosette Sword (Echinodorus Parviflorus ‘Tropica’)

Rosette Sword (Echinodorus parviflorus ‘Tropica’) is a classic South American sword plant known for its compact rosette shape and attractively textured leaves with distinctive pointed tips. It brings that “true planted tank” look—broad-leaf structure, gentle movement, and a lush midground presence—without being overly demanding. In the right spot, it becomes a steady, reliable anchor plant that makes an aquascape feel fuller and more established.

Rosette Sword Overview

Rosette Sword is a great option when you want a sword plant that reads substantial, but not gigantic. It typically tops out around 10 inches in many aquariums (size varies by conditions), which makes it versatile across tank sizes.

Aquarists appreciate Rosette Sword for:

  • Textured, pointed leaves: adds character beyond “plain green” sword foliage
  • Hardy growth habit: adapts well to a wide range of aquariums
  • Great midground structure: fills space without dominating the entire tank
  • Easy to integrate: works as a focal point in smaller tanks or a supporting plant in larger layouts

For aquascaping, use Rosette Sword as a midground builder. In smaller aquariums, it can serve as a focal plant toward the back, creating a strong leafy backdrop without taking up the whole footprint. In larger tanks, it shines in front of taller stem plants, where it hides lower bare stems, fills empty midground zones, and creates that layered “lush bank” look. It pairs especially well with other green plants and hardscape—set it near rockwork for structure, then blend the edges with lower foreground plants for a clean transition.

If you love the “sword plant” look, you can easily build an entire layered layout from one plant family: Modern Aquarium’s Sword Plant category includes everything from large focal-point swords (perfect for anchoring the background) to compact midground varieties like Rosette Sword, all the way down to smaller foreground options like Micro Swords for fine detail along the front edge. Mixing sizes this way creates a natural, cohesive “sword-scape” with depth—big leaves behind, medium texture in the middle, and a clean, grassy finish up front.

Caring for Rosette Sword

Rosette Sword is adaptable and hardy, but it grows best when you treat it like what it is: a root-feeding plant. While it can survive in gravel, you’ll see more robust growth, better leaf size, and a fuller rosette when it’s planted in a nutrient-rich substrate and supported with consistent root nutrition.

A rich planted substrate like Fluval Stratum is an excellent base for swords, and adding root tabs near (not directly on top of) the plant helps keep the root zone fueled over time—especially in inert sand or gravel. Moderate, reliable lighting is usually enough to keep it thriving, and a quality planted-tank light like a Fluval Planted Aquarium Light helps ensure the plant stays compact and healthy rather than stretching. Supplemental iron can also support stronger, greener growth and more vigorous leaf production when your overall fertilization routine is consistent.

Plant it with the crown just above the substrate line (don’t bury the crown). As the plant matures, trim older leaves at the base if they collect algae or begin to decline—sharp aquascaping scissors make quick work of this and help keep the rosette looking fresh.

  • Light: Moderate
  • Temperature Range: 68–82°F
  • Placement: Midground–Background
  • CO₂: Not required (beneficial for faster growth)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Growth Rate: Moderate

Once established, Rosette Sword becomes a dependable “set it and enjoy it” plant: feed the roots, keep the crown exposed, and it will steadily fill out into a clean, structured rosette that supports the entire layout.

Many other sword plants are also available in our online store if you’d like to build a fuller sword-based aquascape. You can find them here.

This sword arrived in excellent shape., if a little smaller than expected. However, it looks like it's taken to my tank and I fully expect it to do very well and grow in the space.

    Aquarium plant
Posted by Michael Stratton on 15 Feb 2022

I am a newcomer to the art of keeping an aquarium. So, this is my first live plant. This is February and it arrived in the middle of a cold snap. I was quite happy when I opened the package and it was perfectly OK. I followed the instructions for unpacking my plants (I also ordered one other plant with this one) that were on the website and did not find any "hitch hikers". All of the leaves were undamaged. It has been in my small aquarium for about a week and is apparently doing very well. I am very pleased with the plant and the company.

    Very Pleased
Posted by James Stodola on 9 Mar 2021

I’ve tried other online providers in the past with mixed to quite disappointing results. The Rosette swords from Modern Aquarium were a bright green color with no yellowing or decayed leaves. All had strong, ample roots. I will not hesitate to order from these folks again.

Of all the plants I ordered this is my favorite. Great stalk structure and super healthy roots. Glad they had this variety and even more glad I went with the Rosette. Beautiful plant.
