Description
Salvinia (Salvinia Rotundifolia Minima) | 4 oz Cup
Salvinia is a fast-growing floating fern native to Central and South America. With its small, oval, velvety leaves and fine, feathery roots, it’s an excellent choice for adding natural surface cover, improving water quality, and creating a more secure environment for your fish.
Salvinia Overview
In the aquarium, Salvinia forms rafts of tiny floating leaves at the surface. Each “pad” bears fine hairs that help shed water, while delicate, root-like structures hang just below the surface, absorbing nutrients directly from the water column. In a planted tank, Salvinia is especially appreciated for:
- Efficient nutrient uptake: The dense mat of roots and leaves is excellent at absorbing excess nutrients, helping to reduce algae by competing for the same resources.
- Shade and security: Floating leaves create gentle shade, which many fish—especially surface-dwellers and shy species—find calming. Bettas, gouramis, small tetras, and fry love the dappled light and overhead cover.
- Soft, natural look: The small, rounded leaves and trailing roots give tanks a wild, “pond-like” feel that pairs beautifully with wood, rocks, and rooted plants below.
Because it is highly adaptable, Salvinia can be used in a wide variety of setups—from community aquariums to breeding tanks and high-bioload systems where extra nutrient uptake is especially helpful. A small 4 oz cup can spread quickly to cover a significant portion of the surface if conditions are favorable.
Caring for Salvinia
Salvinia is very easy to care for and does not have any special requirements, which makes it an ideal floating plant for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike. It does best with moderate lighting, but will tolerate a fairly wide range. For more robust, compact growth, good light and occasional liquid fertilization are recommended.
Because Salvinia floats, it does not need substrate or CO₂ injection. It draws everything it needs from the water column. Good air exchange at the surface and gentle water movement (rather than strong splashing directly on the leaves) will help it stay healthy and dry on top. If it begins to cover too much of the surface, simply thin it out by hand to ensure enough gas exchange and light for plants below.
- Light: Moderate (will grow faster and thicker with good light and nutrients)
- Temperature Range: 65–85°F
- Placement: Floating
- CO₂: Not required
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Fast under good conditions
With regular thinning and basic maintenance, Salvinia can become a very useful “helper plant” in your aquarium—adding a soft, natural surface layer, providing shade and cover for fish and fry, and assisting in nutrient export to support a more stable, balanced system. It also complements other floating species, such as Red Root Floater or Duckweed, when you want a varied surface look.

Salvinia
Posted by Lyndon on 15 Oct 2019I have never worked with this plant before. It is small and a floater plant. It's kinda messy I guess. Still have to get used to it.
