Scarlet Temple Reineckii (Alternanthera reineckii)

Scarlet Temple Reineckii (Alternanthera reineckii) is the kind of red plant that instantly upgrades an aquascape from “nice” to intentional. It’s a classic stem plant from South America that develops warm tones—often olive/bronze on the top of the leaf with richer red or pink tones underneath—creating that high-contrast pop you simply can’t get from green plants alone. Color and leaf form vary by conditions and by the specific strain in circulation, but the role it plays in a layout is consistent: it becomes your accent and focal-point plant.

Scarlet Temple Reineckii Overview

Scarlet Temple grows as upright stems with opposite leaves and looks best when you treat it like a “color block” rather than a single isolated stalk. Planted in small, well-spaced groups, it reads as a deliberate red feature—especially when you set it against fine-textured greens or darker hardscape.

Aquarists appreciate Scarlet Temple Reineckii for:

  • Bold color contrast: red/pink tones that stand out dramatically among green plants
  • Flexible styling: trim it low for a dense midground bush or let it grow taller as a background accent
  • Easy propagation: trim the tops and replant them; the mother plant responds with more side shoots
  • Layout “anchor” effect: perfect for creating a focal point or balancing a rock/wood composition

The key with Scarlet Temple is restraint and placement: a small grouping in the right spot often looks more premium than trying to make the entire tank red. Use it like an accent in photography—one strong color note that guides the eye across the scape.

For aquascaping, Scarlet Temple is especially effective around the rocks you already carry. Tuck a grouped planting behind Seiryu Rock so the reds play off the cool gray striations, or nestle it into the negative space created by Japanese Ohko Dragon Rock to add warmth and depth in the midground. If you’re building a more rugged layout, position it near Lava Rock to contrast its porous, matte texture, and for a darker, more dramatic base, Blue Petrified Rock makes the red tones look even richer. To finish the composition, transition the group into darker driftwood accents like Stump Wood or Saba Wood so the color pop feels framed rather than floating in the middle of the tank.

Caring for Scarlet Temple Reineckii

Scarlet Temple is very doable, but it rewards “dialed-in” basics: good light, consistent nutrients, and stable conditions. Tropica notes that strong lighting encourages deeper red color, and it’s easily propagated by trimming and replanting the top shoots—while also making the mother plant bushier by triggering side shoots.

A nutrient-rich substrate helps it root and grow thicker, and a complete fertilization routine (macros + micros) keeps the plant from stalling. If your goal is maximum red, iron-fertlizer containing micronutrients are part of the equation—but the bigger driver is usually the overall balance of light + nutrients (and, if you run it, CO₂). Many aquarists find that higher light brings better color but also increases the need for clean, algae-controlled conditions; AR can be algae-prone if the tank isn’t stable and maintained

  • Light: High (stronger light drives stronger color and tighter growth)
  • Temperature Range: 68–82°F
  • Placement: Midground–Background
  • CO₂: Not required, but recommended for best color, density, and steadier growth
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Growth Rate: Slow–Moderate (varies by setup and strain)

Once it’s established, success is mostly about shape control and consistency. Plant stems in small groups with a little spacing so light reaches the lower leaves, then trim the tallest tops and replant those healthy, colorful tips to thicken the stand. That trim-and-replant cycle is what turns Scarlet Temple from a few upright stems into a lush red “bush” that looks intentional. If you’re pushing high light for color, keep your maintenance steady (good flow, regular water changes, consistent fertilization) so the plant stays clean and algae doesn’t steal the show—because with red stems, anything on the leaves is immediately noticeable.

Scarlet Temple Reineckii is also available potted.

Bottom line: Scarlet Temple is one of the cleanest ways to add premium-looking contrast to a planted tank—especially when you treat it like a purposeful accent and place it against the right rockwork (Seiryu, Ohko, Lava Rock, or Blue Petrified Rock) and darker driftwood. Pair it with a nutrient-rich substrate, a consistent fertilizer routine (and CO₂ if you want the densest, richest color), and a simple trim/replant rhythm, and you’ll end up with that “signature red focal point” that makes the entire aquascape look professionally planned.

I received my plant order yesterday and I am very pleased with them. The scarlet temple range from 6-10 inches tall. They are pinkish and I’m sure with a lil time, root tabs, fertilizers, and iron they will become brighter. I’m pleased overall with my plant

    Pretty

This is a very pretty addition to a planted aquarium. I planted mine a week ago and it’s brightening considerably. With more light it will develop it’s color, so I recommend to plant it well and be patient as it develops.(: Really pretty plant if you’re looking to add color to your aquarium.
