Description

Tiger Lotus (Nymphaea Lotus)

Tiger Lotus (Nymphaea lotus) is a striking tropical lily from East Africa and Southeast Asia that quickly becomes a centerpiece in any planted aquarium. Its broad, often speckled leaves can range from bright green to deep red with purple or reddish-brown mottling, and they can grow fully submerged or send elegant lily pads to the surface, creating a beautiful play of light and shade.

Tiger Lotus Overview

In the aquarium, Tiger Lotus grows from a bulb and produces broad, heart-shaped to oval leaves on sturdy stems. Submerged leaves are often more compact, while untrimmed stems will rise to the surface and form floating pads that cast dappled shade throughout the tank. As it settles in, Tiger Lotus develops a strong root system and can grow quite quickly under good conditions.

In a planted layout, Tiger Lotus is especially appreciated for:

  • Dramatic focal-point presence: The large, bold leaves and rich coloration make Tiger Lotus a natural choice for a primary focal plant in the midground or background of medium to large aquariums.
  • Surface shade and shelter: If left to send leaves to the surface, the plant creates floating pads that provide gentle shade and make many fish feel more secure, offering cover for shy species and fry.
  • Striking color and pattern: Leaves can range from green to dark red, often with purple or red-brown speckling or tiger-like streaks that add warmth and complexity to the scape.
  • Hardscape highlight: The rounded leaves and warm tones look especially impressive when planted near aquascaping rocks (such as Seiryu Stone) or dramatic driftwood pieces, where they soften hard lines and create a lush, “jungle river” feel.

Planted as a single specimen or as a main centerpiece among other plants, Tiger Lotus instantly draws the eye. It pairs beautifully with fine-leaf background plants, carpeting species in the foreground, and natural hardscape like Stump Wood, Tiger Wood, or Driftwood on Slate to create depth and contrast.

Care Guide For Tiger Lotus

Tiger Lotus appreciates moderate to strong lighting and a nutrient-rich environment. Under good conditions, this tropical lily can grow quickly, sometimes producing new leaves every few days. It sends out a robust root system that anchors firmly in the substrate and allows the plant to draw nutrients effectively, so it does particularly well in loosely packed, nutrient-rich substrates such as Fluval Stratum, Rio Escuro, or similar planted-tank bases. Supplementing with root tabs and a complete liquid fertilizer will help maintain strong, vibrant growth and rich coloration.

You can control the growth form of Tiger Lotus by how you manage its leaves and light. If you prefer a compact, fully submerged plant, regularly trim leaves that race toward the surface and provide steady, moderate to strong light. This encourages the plant to stay shorter, with more submerged foliage and less emphasis on floating pads. If you enjoy the classic lily look with floating leaves, simply allow some longer stems to reach the surface and spread across the top.

Tiger Lotus can be purchased as bulbs or potted plants. When planting a bulb, make sure it is only partially buried, with the growing end above the substrate so it does not rot. Potted plants can be gently removed from their pots and rock wool, then planted so that the crown is just above the substrate surface. Over time, the plant may produce daughter plants or additional bulbs that can be separated and replanted.

While CO₂ injection is not required, tanks with stable CO₂, good light, and consistent fertilization often see faster growth and more intense colors. Our Modern Aquarium Aquascaping Tools  is very useful for managing Tiger Lotus—straight scissors make it easy to trim long stems and floating leaves without disturbing nearby plants, and tweezers help with careful planting around the bulb and roots.

Light: Moderate–Strong
Temperature Range: 71–86°F
Placement: Midground–Background (single specimen or focal point)
CO₂: Not required (beneficial in high-light setups)
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Growth Rate: Fast under good conditions

With good light, a suitable substrate, and periodic trimming, Tiger Lotus will reward you with bold leaves, rich color, and a dramatic presence that helps define the entire layout, whether you choose it as a potted plant or start it from a bulb.

    My feature plant!
Posted by Joel Montesano on 3 Nov 2022

The red tiger lotus is the feature plant in our 20 gallon. When I first received it, some of the leaves had melted and I thought the plant was dead. Thankfully I was told that what matters is the condition of the bulb. I stuck it in my tank, and within days new leaves began to appear. It is now the pride of our plant collection. Great purchase!
