Description
Wisteria (Hygrophila Difformis)
Hygrophila difformis, commonly known as Water Wisteria, is a fast-growing stem plant from India and Thailand that’s loved for its wildly textured, lace-like leaves and its ability to quickly improve water quality. With its unusual, deeply divided foliage and adaptable growth habits, it works beautifully in both traditional planted tanks and more “jungle-style” aquascapes.
Wisteria Overview
In the aquarium, Wisteria produces finely branched, highly variable leaves that can look almost fern-like or “tangled,” depending on temperature and light. The irregular, filigree structure is visually striking and very different from typical stem plants or swords, instantly adding complexity and interest to any layout.
In a planted tank, Wisteria is especially appreciated for:
- Fast nutrient uptake: Wisteria is prized for its ability to rapidly absorb excess nutrients directly from the water column, helping to keep pollutants down and supporting a healthier, more stable aquarium when combined with good maintenance.
- Tangled leaf structure for fry and small fish: The intricate, finely divided leaves create a dense, maze-like thicket that offers excellent hiding spots for fry and small fish, helping them avoid predation and feel more secure.
- Unique, eye-catching foliage: Its irregular, lace-like leaf shape is noticeably different from most common aquarium plants, making it a great “texture plant” for breaking up visual monotony and making the aquascape look more dynamic and intentional.
- Flexible growth options: Wisteria can be rooted in the substrate as a background plant or allowed to float. When left floating, it forms a loose mat of tangled stems and roots that gives additional cover and enhances nutrient uptake from the water column.
Planted in groups, Wisteria forms a lush, bushy stand that looks fantastic behind aquascaping rocks or driftwood and contrasts beautifully with round-leaf plants like Bacopa or broad-leaf species like Anubias and Cryptocorynes
Care Guide for Wisteria
Wisteria is generally easy to grow and very forgiving, which makes it suitable for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike. It does best in medium light and will adapt to a wide range of aquarium conditions.
This unusual plant’s leaf shape is strongly influenced by temperature and lighting. At lower temperatures, it tends to produce smaller, thicker leaves; at higher temperatures, the leaves become larger and more finely divided. Under lower light, the plant may grow more open and leggy, sometimes dropping lower leaves and increasing the spacing between leaf nodes. Under stronger light, it usually stays more compact and fuller, with more intricate foliage.
Wisteria can be planted in sand, gravel, or a planted-tank substrate. A nutrient-rich substrate and regular dosing of a good liquid fertilizer (such as an all-in-one plant fertilizer) will encourage faster growth and more robust foliage. Because it also absorbs nutrients from the water column, it’s especially useful in higher bioload tanks where extra nutrient uptake is beneficial. If you prefer, you can leave Wisteria floating; in that form it will draw all of its nutrients directly from the water and create an excellent “tangle” of cover near the surface.
Hygrophila difformis needs adequate space to thrive and looks best when planted in well-spaced groups of four to six stems so light can reach each one. As it grows, you can propagate the plant easily from cuttings or side shoots—simply trim the healthiest tops and replant them. For clean, precise trimming, use sharp aquascaping scissors, such as our curved aquascaping scissors, which allow you to shape the bush and remove overgrown stems without disturbing nearby plants.
- Light: Medium (more compact and full under stronger light)
- Temperature Range: 71–86°F
- Placement: Background (or floating)
- CO₂: Not required
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Fast under good conditions
Wisteria is also available potted, which can make initial planting and establishment even easier. With its rapid growth, unique foliage, and ability to pull nutrients from the water, it quickly becomes one of the most useful “workhorse” plants in a planted aquarium.

With just moderate light, a decent substrate, and basic fertilization, Wisteria will reward you with fast growth, nutrient uptake, and a beautifully intricate, fry-friendly thicket of greenery. And if you’re battling algae, consider adding some of our algae-eating snails—such as Tiger Eye Nerite Snails—which are excellent grazers and will help keep glass and hardscape cleaner while your plants do the work of stabilizing the tank.

Beautiful but doesn’t look like Wisteria pictured
Posted by Jana Stinman on 18 Dec 2023Pictures has lace like leaves. Which is what I was expecting…. What I got has more of a mint leaf shape. Still Wisteria just more broad leaf than I was hoping for.

My new favorite!
Posted by Debra Gadebusch on 7 Jul 2023My new favorite background plant. I ordered two potted & got two really nice plants. I planted as recommended & man have they grown! It's only been a week and they have grown an inch or more already. Very healthy plants! I'll order more but not until cooler weather. I love the liquid Co2 as that I ordered too!

Finally, success!
Posted by Lorenzo Henderson on 21 Sep 2022I'm relatively new to planted tanks and simply couldn't find plants that would "thrive". Two months ago I did some research and wisteria looked like a good gamble. I'm in California and nowhere local seemed to carry it. The plants I got from Modern Aquarium were in great shape, even from the other side of the country, and took right away in my tank. The plants I got were emersed, but there was no melting of the existing leaves, it just started growing immersed leaves and growing offshoots. I've already had to do some trimming and used the cuttings to fill out other areas of my 75 gallon tank. The results I've gotten from these plants is so successful and so opposite of other plants I've tried its scary LOL. But I love them, I wish I could add a picture to my review!

Super Healthy Water Wisteria
Posted by Sean Nash on 9 Aug 2022This is a great plant to get a ton of photosynthesis happening in your tank... STAT. The specimens I received were ideal. Four-ish stems per bunch, 8-9" tall, and packed with healthy algae-free leaves. This was my first order from Modern Aquarium, and I will certainly order more in the future!

Water Wisteria
Posted by Lacy on 8 Nov 2021This is a fun little plant. It came in good condition, with lobe shaped leaves. It grows very quickly!! Since being in my tank, the leaves have started to appear more separated/feathery (not sure the right word for it). It’s really pretty. Very easy to propogate. I am experimenting with using it as a carpeting plant.
