Anubias on Driftwood | Large

Anubias on Driftwood (Large) is one of the easiest ways to make a tank look established from day one. You get a bold piece of natural wood with a mature Anubias already attached—no tying, no gluing, no waiting for roots to grab. Anubias species come from river and stream edges in Africa, where they naturally grow clinging to wood and stone in shallow, moving water. In the aquarium, that translates into a tough, adaptable plant with thick, dark green leaves that hold up well in real-world community tanks—even with active, boisterous fish.

Anubias on Driftwood (Large) Overview

The “Large” size is ideal when you want a true midground anchor or a focal hardscape piece that also adds hardy greenery—without adding work to your routine. Because the Anubias is already attached to the driftwood, this is about as easy as live planting gets: place it where you want it, and you’re done. There’s no delicate planting, no special substrate requirements, and no constant trimming schedule—just a tough, slow-growing plant that settles in and stays put. It’s especially useful for building structure in the center of the tank, creating shaded comfort zones for fish, and giving shrimp a natural grazing area as biofilm develops on the wood and roots over time.

Aquarists appreciate Anubias on Driftwood (Large) for:

  • Instant natural look: wood + plant combined into one ready-to-place feature
  • Low-light success: thrives in low-tech setups without intense lighting
  • Fish-resistant durability: sturdy leaves that are generally ignored by many nibblers
  • Easy placement flexibility: works as a centerpiece, corner anchor, or midground divider

For aquascaping, this piece helps “finish” a layout by adding the kind of realistic structure you see in nature—branches, shadows, and leafy growth all in one. You can build around it with stones like Seiryu Rock or Blue Petrified Rock to lock the driftwood into the scape, then sprinkle a few botanicals—such as Aquatic Veralu Leaves or Aquatic Woodapple Pods—around the base to create a subtle leaf-litter zone that makes the whole tank feel more habitat-true and less freshly arranged.

And because the attached wood has a dark, natural look similar to our Blackwood, you can add additional Blackwood pieces nearby to extend the same tone and branch structure across the aquascape—an easy way to make the layout feel cohesive, intentional, and fully “built out” from one side of the tank to the other..

Caring for Anubias on Driftwood (Large)

Anubias is a rhizome plant, meaning the thick horizontal stem (rhizome) should never be buried. With an attached driftwood piece, you’re already set up correctly—just place it where you want it and let the roots continue to strengthen their hold over time.

Anubias grows slowly, so it doesn’t demand frequent trimming or heavy fertilization. Low to moderate light is ideal, and gentle flow helps keep debris off the leaves. Because it’s a slow grower, very intense light can sometimes encourage algae on the leaf surfaces—so a stable lighting routine usually keeps it looking clean. If algae does appear, nerite snails and mystery snails are excellent at grazing algae from plant leaves and hardscape, and can also help with general cleanup and leftover organics that contribute to algae pressure.

  • Light: Low
  • Temperature Range: 69–86°F
  • Placement: Foreground–Midground
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Growth Rate: Slow

Once it’s in the tank, maintenance is simple: keep it out of heavy debris buildup, avoid burying the rhizome, and remove any older leaves that decline over time. The driftwood itself will also “age” beautifully, developing natural coloration and biofilm that shrimp love—making this one of those pieces that looks better and more natural the longer it’s in your aquarium.

Anubias are also available on driftwood in size small, as bare-root plants, potted, and on lava rock.

NOTE: Each plant/driftwood will have a unique look. The photo provides you with an idea of what it will look like and is not a representation of the exact item you will be receiving.

Bigger than expected, well matured plant
Posted by Fabienne Wittwer on 15 Oct 2019

The wood and plant was bigger than I expected which is great. The shape of the wood was not the most beautiful but of course that is my personal opinion. The wood that I got was a round branch with a stump of another cut off branch to the side. Approximately 3 inches in diameter. It just is a bit basic and round. The plant is very nicely attached to the wood and you can see that the roots are mature and were provided enough time to grown on to the wood. I am very happy with my purchase!
