Description
Anubias on Lava Rock | Large
Anubias on Lava Rock (Large) is one of the simplest ways to add instant, natural greenery to your aquarium—especially if you want a plant that’s tough, low-maintenance, and hard to kill. Anubias species come from Africa, where they naturally grow attached to stones and wood along river edges and boggy waterways. In the aquarium, they produce thick, dark green leaves that hold up well in real-world tanks—including setups with active, boisterous fish.
And the best part: we’ve already done the hard part. The Anubias is securely attached to lava rock, so there’s no tying, no gluing, and no guesswork—just place it in the tank and enjoy an instant “established” look.
Anubias on Lava Rock Overview
The Large size is ideal for creating a strong foreground-to-midground anchor. Lava rock adds a rugged, natural texture, while the Anubias brings slow-growing greenery that stays attractive without constant trimming.
Aquarists appreciate Anubias on Lava Rock (Large) for:
- Ultimate ease: place it in the tank—no planting required
- Low-light success: thrives in low-tech and shaded setups
- Durable leaves: generally ignored by many plant-nibbling fish
- Instant hardscape detail: adds a natural focal point and structure right away
For aquascaping, this piece is a perfect “drop-in” accent around larger hardscape. Tuck it along a rock line, place it at the base of driftwood, or use several pieces to create a natural-looking planted ridge. Because it’s already mounted, it’s also great for filling gaps and finishing edges—those spots where loose plants are annoying to keep in place. If you want to build out the look, we also sell lava rock separately, along with other aquascaping stones like Seiryu Rock, Japanese Ohko Dragon Rock, and Blue Petrified Rock, so you can match textures and create a cohesive layout.
Caring for Anubias on Lava Rock
Anubias is a rhizome plant, meaning the thick horizontal stem (rhizome) must stay exposed. With this mounted version, you’re already set up correctly—just don’t bury the Anubias itself under substrate. You can partially nestle the lava rock into the gravel for stability, but keep the rhizome and plant base above the substrate line.
Anubias does not require bright light or heavy fertilization. It grows slowly and steadily, which means low maintenance and very little trimming. Gentle flow helps keep debris off the leaves, and a stable lighting routine helps reduce algae on slow-growing foliage.
- Light: Low
- Temperature Range: 69–86°F
- Placement: Foreground–Midground
- CO₂: Not required
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Slow
Anubias can be placed as a single specimen or used in groups for a more planted, natural effect. It also plays well with other Anubias varieties—so if you love this look, explore our Anubias plant category to mix different leaf sizes and textures, then tie it all together with complementary rocks and driftwood for a fully “built out” aquascape.
Anubias are also available on driftwood in size large, as bare-root plants, potted, and on lava rock in smaller size.
Note: Each plant/lava rock will have a unique look. The photo provides an idea of what it may look like and is not a representation of the exact item you will receive.
