Description
Broadleaf Chilensis Sagittaria
Broadleaf “Chilensis” Sagittaria (Sagittaria platyphylla), sometimes called Giant Sagittaria, is a low-growing rosette plant from North America and Southeast Asia. The “giant” name refers not to its height, but to its broader, thicker leaves compared to other Sagittaria species, which makes it stand out as a bold, grass-like accent in the foreground and lower midground of planted aquariums.
Broadleaf “Chilensis” Sagittaria Overview
In the aquarium, Broadleaf Sagittaria forms compact rosettes of strap-like leaves that are wider and more substantial than those of typical dwarf Sagittaria. Over time, it spreads by runners, forming a dense stand of plants that can range from a short “meadow” in the foreground to a low, flowing border in the midground.
In a planted aquarium, Broadleaf Chilensis Sagittaria is especially appreciated for:
- Broad, sturdy leaves with a “giant” look: The thicker, wider leaf blades give it a more substantial presence than fine grasses, adding variety and visual weight to the foreground and lower midground.
- Flexible placement: While excellent as a foreground carpeting plant in larger tanks, it also works beautifully in the midground as a low border or transition between short carpets and taller background plants.
- Natural, meadow-like effect: When allowed to spread by runners, it creates a lush, grassy field that looks particularly attractive around aquascaping rocks and driftwood, softening hardscape and tying the layout together.
- Benefits for fish and invertebrates: The dense stands of leaves provide shelter and foraging areas for shrimp, fry, and small fish, and offer line-of-sight breaks that help reduce stress for shy species.
Broadleaf Sagittaria pairs nicely with carpeting plants (like Monte Carlo or Chain Swords) in the very front, and taller background species such as vallisneria, Cryptocorynes, or swords behind it. Planted around Seiryu Stone, Japanese Ohko Dragon Rock or driftwood (such as Saba Wood or Blackwood), it can create a natural riverbank or shoreline look.
Disclaimer: Due to local restrictions, this plant does not ship to Washington.
Caring for Broadleaf “Chilensis” Sagittaria
Broadleaf Sagittaria is easy to care for and adapts well to most community aquarium setups, but it really shines when provided with moderate or better lighting and a nutrient-rich environment. Under good conditions, the plants stay relatively low and spread steadily via runners, gradually forming a thick stand across the foreground and into the lower midground.
A good substrate is important for this root-feeding plant. It does best in loosely packed, nutrient-rich substrates such as planted-tank soils, but will also perform well in sand or gravel when supplemented with root tabs. Regular fertilization helps maintain strong growth and deep green coloration, and iron supplementation (for example, with an iron-rich liquid fertilizer) can be especially helpful if you notice yellowing leaves or pale new growth.
You can plant Broadleaf Sagittaria in small groups in the foreground or midground, spacing rosettes a short distance apart so runners have room to spread. In the foreground, it can form a slightly taller “turf” in front of midground plants; in the midground, it makes an excellent low border in front of taller stems or background grasses. Over time, you can thin or reposition new plants as needed to keep pathways clear and maintain your desired layout.
CO₂ is not required, but in brighter, more advanced aquascapes, CO₂ supplementation will encourage faster, denser growth. Our Modern Aquarium 6-Piece Aquascaping Tool Set (9.9") makes planting and maintenance easier: straight tweezers help seat rosettes firmly in the substrate, while curved scissors are perfect for removing older or damaged leaves without disturbing the surrounding plants.
- Light: Moderate–Strong
- Temperature Range: 72–82°F
- Placement: Foreground–Midground
- CO₂: Not required (beneficial in high-energy setups)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under good conditions
With a bit of light, nutrients, and patience, Broadleaf Chilensis Sagittaria will reward you with a lush, grassy look that works equally well as a foreground “field” or a low midground border.

Sagitteria platyphylla "chilensis"
Posted by Unknown on 21 Nov 2019As another reviewer mentioned, the "set of 2 bunches" could more accurately be described as "set of 2 plants," rather than the clump represented in the photo. The plants arrived today in great shape. Each plant had well developed roots and were healthy. I have never had this plant before, and was delighted to find that they are a much darker green than they look in the photo - darker than the sagitteria subulata I have kept, as well. I am pleased with this interesting dark color that is different from my other plants.
