Description

Chain Sword Broad Leaf (Echinodorus Quadricostatus)

Chain Sword Broad Leaf (Echinodorus quadricostatus), also known as Dwarf Swordplant, is a compact foreground sword from Brazil that forms low, broad-leaved clumps across the substrate. Unlike many larger Echinodorus species, it stays short and spreads by runners, making it an excellent choice for creating a soft, lawn-like foreground in planted aquariums.

Chain Sword Broad Leaf Overview

In the aquarium, Chain Sword Broad Leaf produces short rosettes of wider, strap-like leaves that give it a fuller, more substantial look than narrow-leaf carpeting plants. As it settles in, it sends out runners that produce new plants, gradually filling open areas with a dense, bright green “mini sword” meadow.

Aquarists value Echinodorus quadricostatus for:

  • True foreground sword growth: It has the classic Echinodorus look in a much smaller package, staying compact while spreading across the substrate rather than towering into the midground.
  • Broad-leaf texture in the front: The wider leaves contrast nicely with fine grasses and tiny-leaf carpets like Monte Carlo or dwarf hairgrass, adding variety and making the aquascape appear more layered and interesting.
  • Carpeting via runners: Under good conditions, it propagates quickly through runners, forming a lush, interconnected network of plants that fills the foreground with a natural, lawn-like effect.
  • Benefits for tank inhabitants: The low rosettes and spreading growth create shelter and micro-habitats for shrimp, fry, and small bottom dwellers, while the plant’s nutrient uptake can help support overall tank stability when combined with proper maintenance.

Planted in small groups at the front of the aquarium and allowed to spread, Chain Sword Broad Leaf looks especially attractive around Seiryu Stone, Petrified Rock, driftwood, and other hardscape, where it softens edges and ties the entire layout together. Many aquarists also like to combine it with our Chain Sword Narrow Leaf for subtle variations in leaf width and height across the foreground, and to explore our dedicated Sword Plants category for larger Echinodorus species that can continue the “sword” theme into the midground and background.

Care Guide for Chain Sword Broad Leaf

Chain Sword Broad Leaf is quite adaptable and will adjust its growth to the intensity of the lighting. Under moderate to strong light and in a nutrient-rich substrate, it will stay relatively low and spread well through runners, creating that desirable “sword lawn” in the foreground. In lower light, leaves may grow slightly taller and more widely spaced, and carpeting will be slower.

The plant appreciates a good substrate—such as Fluval Stratum, Rio Escuro, or other planted-tank soils—and will respond well to additional nutrients at the root zone. While specialized substrate is not absolutely required, Echinodorus quadricostatus will always do better in a loosely packed, nutrient-rich medium. If you notice yellowing or pale leaves, supplementing with a quality fertilizer and iron source (such as Elemental Iron Plant Fertilizer) can help restore strong color and growth.

  • Light: Moderate–Bright
  • Temperature Range: 68–84°F
  • Placement: Foreground
  • CO₂: Not required (beneficial in brighter, high-energy setups)
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under good conditions

Chain Sword Broad Leaf is best planted in the foreground in small clumps, spacing them slightly apart so runners have room to spread and fill in. Over time, it will produce daughter plants along its runners; you can leave them to form a continuous carpet or carefully thin and replant them where needed. While CO₂ supplementation is not required, it will encourage faster, denser carpeting under stronger lighting, especially in more advanced aquascapes. Our Fully Automated CO₂ System with pH & CO₂ Controller can help maintain stable CO₂ levels if you choose to run a high-energy planted tank.

For planting and maintenance, tools make a big difference. Modern Aquarium Aquascaping Tools are ideal for this kind of foreground work: straight or curved tweezers help you seat small rosettes firmly in the substrate without damaging roots, and curved scissors make it easy to remove older, damaged leaves close to the base without disturbing the surrounding carpet.

With good light, reasonable fertilization, and patience, Chain Sword Broad Leaf will gradually transform the front of your aquarium into a lush, sword-like meadow that feels both natural and refined.

I've searched for a couple weeks before I ordered my chain sword from here. Most sites I came across wouldn't specify which chain sword they were selling, but Modern Aquarium actually had the broad leaf version I was seeking. I was so happy when my order arrived, perfect all around.
