Description
Dwarf Sagittaria Subulata
A hardy, grass-like foreground plant, Dwarf Sagittaria is ideal for creating natural-looking “lawns” in your aquarium and is forgiving enough for beginners while still appealing to experienced aquascapers.
Dwarf Sagittaria Overview
Sagittaria subulata, also known as needle Sagittaria, originates from the coastal areas of the Eastern United States. It has a narrow, grass-like leaf shape and typically stays low in the aquarium, forming dense, bright green clumps that resemble an underwater meadow.
In the aquarium, Dwarf Sagittaria:
- Creates attractive, grassy beds in the foreground or midground
- Provides cover and foraging areas for small fish, fry, and shrimp
- Helps soften hardscape edges and transitions between rocks and larger plants
- Tolerates a wide range of water conditions, including higher pH and harder water
Because it is hardy and adaptable, Dwarf Sagittaria is an excellent choice for community tanks, beginner setups, and aquascapes where you want a low-maintenance carpeting effect without the demands of high-tech lighting and CO₂.
Caring For Dwarf Sagittaria Subulata
Dwarf Sagittaria does not require intense lighting or specialized substrate to survive, which makes it a great plant for beginners. Like most rooted plants, however, it will grow faster and look fuller when provided with a good substrate, moderate lighting, and occasional fertilization, such as root tabs.
- Light: Moderate (can tolerate lower light, but carpets more densely with moderate lighting)
- Temperature Range: 71–84°F
- Placement: Foreground–Midground
- CO₂: Not required (optional for faster, denser growth)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Moderate
This plant looks best when planted in small groups in the foreground of the aquarium. Plant individual rosettes a short distance apart; under good conditions, Dwarf Sagittaria will quickly begin to spread by sending out runners, gradually filling in the area and forming a natural carpet. If it grows taller than you’d like, you can gently thin or replant runners, or move taller plants toward the midground.
Dwarf Sagittaria is also available potted, which can make initial planting easier and help the plant establish more quickly.

Great Plant
Posted by Unknown on 6 Dec 2021Reviewing this after my second order of the plant. Will surely be getting aa third order down the road. I may have a lot of light in my tank because these plants dont seem to grow too tall. But I like the look of them staying lower to the gravel. Multiple munches have also sent off runners, so I have a few chains of these throughout the tank.

Excellent!
Posted by Christopher on 21 Aug 2021I purchased a few bunches of dwarf sag and it arrived timely and in great condition. It's easy to plant and very undemanding. Within a few days it was already sending runners and new little plantlets. Several of the original plants had some significant melt and required some trimming back, but they're bouncing back and propagating.

Dwarf sagittaria
Posted by Conor Sullivan on 3 Aug 2021Out of the two bunches I received I was able to get 6 plants to spread around my 20 gallon. They were quick to come and the roots looked healthy and Long. I've had them 3 days in now and they seem to have adapted quite well in my aquarium.
