Description
Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis Acicularis)
Dwarf Hairgrass is one of the classic carpeting plants in the hobby, perfect for creating a soft, natural “lawn” in the foreground of your aquarium. Its fine, grass-like leaves sway gently in the current and provide fantastic cover for fry, small fish, and shrimp.
Dwarf Hairgrass Overview
Eleocharis acicularis, commonly known as Dwarf Hairgrass, is a grass-like plant whose height will vary with lighting and CO₂ levels. Under brighter, more intense light it tends to stay shorter and denser; under lower light it can grow taller and more “meadow-like.” It produces very fine, bright green blades that, over time, connect via runners to form a continuous carpet.
In the aquarium, Dwarf Hairgrass:
- Creates an attractive, natural-looking “lawn” in the foreground of the tank
- Offers excellent shelter and foraging areas for fry, small fish, and shrimp
- Softens the transition between open substrate, rocks, and driftwood
- Works beautifully in nature-style and Iwagumi aquascapes where a clean, low groundcover is desired
When given the right conditions, a small planting can spread across the front of the aquarium, transforming bare substrate into a lush, living carpet. Dwarf Hairgrass looks especially striking when planted around and between rocks or at the base of driftwood, where the fine green blades contrast sharply with the hardscape and create a very natural, riverbank- or meadow-inspired look.
Care Guide for Dwarf Hairgrass
Dwarf Hairgrass is not difficult to grow as long as its basic requirements are met. It does best in a nutrient-rich substrate with regular fertilization, for example by using root tabs or a rich base such as Fluval Stratum, and it appreciates moderate to strong lighting to stay low and dense. Keeping the blades free of debris is important, both for appearance and for plant health, because clean leaves allow light to reach the base of the plant and reduce the risk of decay in the carpet.
Gentle water movement and the presence of small scavengers already in your tank, such as corydoras catfish, can help keep detritus from settling between the blades as they sift the substrate for food. While CO₂ is not strictly required, Dwarf Hairgrass responds very strongly to added CO₂. If you are aiming for a dense, low, “carpet-style” effect, a stable CO₂ supply can greatly improve the speed of spread, thickness, and overall vigor of the lawn.
- Light: Moderate–Strong (stronger light helps keep the carpet low and dense)
- Temperature Range: 72–82°F
- Placement: Foreground
- CO₂: Not required, but highly recommended for a thick, uniform carpet
- Difficulty: Moderate (easy to keep, more demanding to achieve a perfect carpet)
- Growth Rate: Moderate (faster with good light, substrate, and CO₂)
For best results, plant Dwarf Hairgrass in small clumps, spaced a short distance apart in the foreground. Over time, it will send out runners through the substrate, filling in the gaps and creating a continuous carpet. Occasional trimming of the tops encourages lateral growth and helps the carpet stay thick and healthy.
Dwarf Hairgrass is also available potted, which can make initial planting easier and help the plant establish more quickly.
To take your carpet to the next level, consider using our Fully Automated CO₂ System with pH & CO₂ Controller. Even though this plant will grow without injected CO₂, a stable, automated CO₂ system will significantly improve density, speed of spread, and overall health—especially in high-light setups aiming for that “contest-ready” lawn effect.

Separate them
Posted by Neno Albert on 14 Aug 2020I bought 2 bunches so I could be as picky as I wanted with what I planted. I floated them and picked out what to didn't like. A bit on the yellow side when arriving, but not decaying or dying. The hair grass was pretty long already, which was nice to prune to desired height! Be warned, it's one that you want to take your time planting and ideally not in clumps. It not only looks better, but increases the coloration when separated and tweezed into substrate.
