Description
Rotala Macrandra
Rotala Macrandra, often called Giant Rotala or Red Rotala, is one of the most striking red stem plants in the aquarium hobby. Native to Southeast Asia, this plant is admired for its delicate oval leaves and vivid coloration, which can range from olive-green under moderate conditions to pink, red, or deep rosy tones under stronger light and balanced nutrition. When grown well, Rotala Macrandra becomes a true showpiece plant—soft in texture, bold in color, and instantly eye-catching in the midground or background of a planted aquarium.
Rotala Macrandra Overview
Rotala Macrandra is best used as a color accent plant or grouped background feature. Its fine, delicate leaves create a softer look than broad-leaf plants, while its red coloration provides strong contrast against green stems, Crypts, Swords, Ferns, Anubias, and carpet plants.
Aquarists appreciate Rotala Macrandra for:
- Exceptional red and pink coloration: Strong light and steady nutrients can produce intense color.
- Elegant leaf texture: Delicate oval leaves create a refined, high-end planted-tank look.
- Beautiful contrast: Looks especially impressive beside bold green plants and darker hardscape.
- Aquascaping focal power: A small grouping can become a major visual highlight.
- Trim-and-replant propagation: Healthy cuttings can be replanted to build a fuller stand.
Rotala Macrandra is not just another background stem plant—it is a plant you use when you want a deliberate focal point. Planted in a group behind green foreground and midground plants like Dwarf Sagittaria, Cryptocoryne Lucens, Anubias Nana, or Java Fern, its red tones become even more dramatic. It also looks excellent behind rocks such as Seiryu Rock or Japanese Ohko Dragon Rock, where the warm red/pink foliage contrasts beautifully with cooler stone textures.
Care Guide For Rotala Macrandra
Rotala Macrandra can adapt to different aquarium conditions, but it looks its best in a well-maintained planted tank with good light, consistent fertilization, and stable water conditions. Under moderate light, growth is usually slower and the plant may remain more olive-green. Under stronger light, with adequate nutrients, the upper leaves can turn much more colorful—ranging from pink to red depending on the setup.
This is a more refined stem plant, so consistency matters. A complete liquid fertilizer routine helps support steady growth, and iron/micronutrients can help maintain stronger coloration when lighting and overall nutrients are in balance. CO₂ is not absolutely required to keep the plant alive, but it is strongly beneficial if your goal is compact growth, richer color, and fuller tops. A high-quality planted-tank light, such as the Fluval Plant Spectrum 4.0 Bluetooth 24/7 LED Aquarium Light, is a strong choice for bringing out the best color and growth form.
- Light: Moderate–High; stronger light supports better red/pink coloration
- Temperature Range: 70–82°F
- Placement: Midground–Background
- CO₂: Not required, but strongly recommended for best results
- Difficulty: Moderate to Advanced
- Growth Rate: Medium–Fast under favorable conditions
Once established, Rotala Macrandra should be trimmed regularly to keep it compact and attractive. When the stems reach your desired height, cut the healthiest tops and replant them into the substrate to create a denser grouping. This trim-and-replant routine is the key to turning a few stems into a full, colorful stand. Keep the plant in a stable area with good light and flow, avoid letting taller plants shade it, and remove older lower stems if they become thin over time. With consistent care, Rotala Macrandra rewards the aquarist with one of the most beautiful red displays available in a planted aquarium.
Modern Aquarium also offers other Rotala varieties, including including Rotala Vietnam, Rotala Indica, and Rotala Wallichii, giving you the option to mix different leaf shapes, growth habits, and color tones for a more dynamic stem-plant aquascape.
