Description

Anubias Barteri var. Coffeefolia

Anubias barteri var. Coffeefolia is a classic “statement Anubias” that combines bulletproof durability with a distinctive, high-end texture. Native to West Africa, it naturally grows along riverbanks and in stream environments where it clings to hard surfaces and tolerates changing conditions. In the aquarium, coffeefolia stands out for its thick, deep-green leaves and signature rippled, corrugated look—almost like leaf veins pressed into leather—which gives your hardscape a more mature, established feel.

Anubias Barteri var. Coffeefolia Overview

If you want a plant that stays attractive with minimal effort, coffeefolia is hard to beat. It’s not delicate, it’s not fussy, and it’s not easily “bullied” by typical aquarium inhabitants. The leaves are thick and sturdy, which means it holds up well in active community tanks and is far less likely to get shredded or constantly nibbled compared to softer stem plants.

It also tolerates a wide range of water conditions and lighting levels, making it a go-to choice for beginners and experienced aquascapers alike—especially in tanks where you want dependable greenery that won’t unravel your layout.

Aquarists appreciate Anubias coffeefolia for:

  • Serious hardiness: durable leaves and a tough growth habit that thrives in real-world tanks
  • Fish-resistant structure: generally ignored by many plant-pickers and boisterous fish
  • Low-tech friendly success: strong performance without CO₂ or specialty substrate
  • Iconic leaf texture: rippled, corrugated leaves that add depth and “mature” detail
  • Hardscape-first placement: perfect for wood and rock scapes where you don’t want rooting plants

In an aquascape, coffeefolia works like a “texture anchor”—it breaks up big stretches of rock and wood with bold, rippled leaves that look intentional even when the layout is simple. Set it where the eye naturally lands: on a midground rock shelf, at the base of a wood branch, or tucked into a crevice where the rhizome can grip and the leaves can fan outward. Against Seiryu Rock, the deep green and corrugated leaf surface gives you a clean, high-contrast focal point; with Ohko Dragon Rock, it leans more natural and earthy, like a plant that’s been growing there forever.

Add a few botanicals around the base to create that subtle “leaf-litter collection zone” where debris would naturally gather, and the whole scene reads less like décor and more like a real riverbank slice.

Caring for Anubias Barteri var. Coffeefolia

Coffeefolia is an epiphyte (rhizome plant), meaning it’s meant to grow attached to hardscape—not buried like a rooted plant. The thick horizontal stem (the rhizome) should never be buried. Substrate quality is not the key here—placement is. Wedge it into a crevice, attach it to wood/rock with thread or gel, and let the roots grip over time. If you do place it in substrate for aesthetics, keep the rhizome fully exposed above the substrate line.

This plant thrives in low to moderate light and doesn’t require CO₂. Under brighter light it can put out new leaves more quickly, but because it’s a slower grower, very intense lighting can encourage algae to settle on the leaf surfaces. A steady, moderate lighting routine and gentle flow usually keep it looking clean—and if you want a simple, natural assist, nerite snails are excellent at grazing algae from Anubias leaves and hardscape, while mystery snails can help with general cleanup and leftover organics that contribute to algae pressure.

  • Light: Low
  • Temperature Range: 65–86°F
  • Placement: Midground
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Growth Rate: Slow

What makes coffeefolia special is how little you have to do once it’s placed. You’re not trimming it weekly like a stem plant or constantly replanting runners like a carpet—most maintenance is simply removing an older leaf if it ever gets damaged or shaded. Because it’s so sturdy and so tolerant, it’s a perfect “anchor plant” for tanks that are still maturing, tanks with active fish, or aquascapes where you want a reliable green focal element that won’t shift, melt, or fall apart if conditions aren’t absolutely perfect. In open-top aquariums, it can also be grown emersed (roots submerged, leaves above the surface) for a bold, rippled-leaf look that feels like a true river-edge plant.

Anubias are also available potted, already attached to driftwood, and rocks.

    Doing Well
Posted by Brandy Linden on 2 Feb 2021

These arrived looking beautiful. They seem to be hanging on but haven't grown much as of yet. I'm new to aquarium plants so I am reading and trying to get them to flourish. Thank you! Bought them to help lower pH in tank. As of yet it is still very high, I'm still having to use the pH liquid lower stuff but it doesn't help for very long if at all.

I ordered a small plant that arrived healthy. Roots were well developed. I attached to some driftwood with a loose zip tie. Roots seem to be attaching at the moment. Beautiful plant.

Arrived in perfect condition. Waiting for it to grow full size. These are slow growers, so might take a little bit of time.

    Anubias small size
Posted by Todd Schweitzer on 15 Jan 2020

I ordered the smallest size of this available. It had one large leaf, two medium sized leafs and several small leafs. A good size plant but the rizome was small so I could not divide it into more plants but a healthy attractive plant.
