Description

Anubias Frazeri | Potted

Anubias Frazeri is the kind of plant that instantly makes an aquarium feel more established. With its sturdy stems and broad, arrow-shaped leaves, it brings that classic, timeless Anubias look—only with a slightly larger, more dramatic leaf form than smaller varieties. It’s an ideal choice for aquarists who want something hardy, low-maintenance, and long-lasting, especially in community tanks where softer plants can get roughed up.

Anubias Frazeri Overview

In an aquascape, Anubias Frazeri works beautifully as a midground anchor or a low background accent, especially when you use it to build a shaded, natural understory around hardscape. Rather than “planting” it like a stem plant, the best look comes from mounting it to rock or driftwood, letting the leaves rise naturally out of crevices and edges. Over time, it becomes a stable, evergreen focal plant that doesn’t demand constant replanting or trimming.

If you’re looking for a plant that adds structure without adding stress, Anubias Frazeri is a go-to for:

  • Low-tech setups that don’t rely on high light or CO₂
  • Adding bold leaf shape and texture to the midground
  • Hardscape layouts—especially when mounted to rock or driftwood
  • Tanks with active fish, thanks to its thicker, tougher leaves
  • Creating a shaded, natural look that makes a scape feel mature

Once it’s settled, Frazeri is the kind of plant that quietly “holds” a layout together—reliable, clean, and consistently good-looking for the long haul.

Caring for Anubias Frazeri

Anubias Frazeri is famously forgiving and does not need intense lighting or a specialized substrate to thrive. In fact, low to moderate light is often ideal: it supports steady growth while helping reduce algae pressure on the slow-growing leaves. The most important rule is simple: never bury the rhizome (the thick horizontal stem where the leaves and roots emerge). If the rhizome is buried, it can rot.

Instead, place the plant with the rhizome above the substrate, or—better yet—attach it to hardscape using thread or an aquarium-safe plant glue. Over time, the roots naturally grip the surface and the plant will look like it has always been part of the scape. Maintenance is minimal: remove older leaves if needed, keep the plant free of debris, and be patient—growth is slow but steady. If you ever want to propagate it, you can divide the rhizome, making sure each section has multiple healthy leaves.

  • Light: Low to Moderate
  • Temperature Range: 70–82°F
  • Placement: Midground to Background (best mounted on hardscape)
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Growth Rate: Slow

With stable conditions and moderate nutrients (a light, consistent liquid fertilizer routine is plenty), Anubias Frazeri becomes one of the most dependable plants you can own—set it in place, keep the rhizome exposed, and let it gradually mature into a permanent part of your aquascape.

Modern Aquarium offers many other Anubias of various shapes and sizes including, Anubias Nana, Anubias Congensis, and Anubias Hastifolia, to mention just a few.

Why Choose the Potted Version

Choosing the potted version is a great option if you want an easier, more stable start—especially with Anubias. Because it’s grown and maintained in its pot, it typically arrives with a well-developed root system and a “settled” growth habit, which makes handling and placement more straightforward.

You can temporarily place the pot into the substrate while the plant acclimates, or remove it from the pot and mount it right away to rock or driftwood for the most natural look. Many aquascapers prefer potted Anubias because it tends to stay put better during early maintenance and makes it easier to position the plant exactly where you want it in the layout.

I needed a mid-background plant for my non-co2 10g tank. All the roots were together upon receiving. Great length on the leaves, and good size!
