Description

Italian Vallisneria Spiralis

A classic background plant, Italian Vallisneria produces tall, ribbon-like leaves that sway gently in the current, creating a lush “underwater grass” effect along the back and sides of your aquarium.

Italian Vallisneria Spiralis Overview

Vallisneria spiralis, also known as straight Vallisneria or Italian Val, is one of the best-known and most popular aquatic plants in the hobby. It forms long, narrow, tape-like leaves that can reach up to about 24 inches in length, emerging from a central rosette and spreading over time via runners.

In the aquarium, Italian Vallisneria is especially effective when planted in groups in the background or along the sides. Its tall leaves:

  • Form a natural, green “curtain” that hides heaters, filter intakes, and other equipment
  • Provide shelter and line-of-sight breaks for community fish
  • Give livebearers, small fish, and fry a dense, secure area to explore and retreat into
  • Add vertical movement and a river- or lake-like feel as the leaves sway in the current

Over time, a healthy stand of Italian Val can transform the back of your tank into a lush, planted backdrop that frames your hardscape and midground plants.

Care Guide for Italian Vallisneria Spiralis

Italian Vallisneria is very adaptable and does well in a wide range of aquarium conditions, including many coldwater setups. It is an excellent plant for beginners and new tanks because of its relatively fast growth and ability to tolerate harder water.

  • Light: Moderate (can adapt to lower light, but grows fuller with moderate lighting)
  • Temperature Range: 70–82°F (tolerant of slightly cooler conditions in many setups)
  • Placement: Background / sides and corners
  • CO₂: Not required
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under good conditions

Because Vallisneria can grow tall, the best placement for V. spiralis is in the background or around the corners and edges of the aquarium. Plant individual rosettes a few inches apart in the substrate. While it does not require a specialty substrate, it will appreciate a nutrient-rich substrate or the use of root tabs, since it feeds heavily through its roots.

Given good conditions, Italian Vallisneria will send out runners across the substrate, producing new daughter plants and gradually forming a dense stand. You can thin or reposition runners as needed to keep pathways open or maintain the shape of your aquascape.

Picture shows nice full plant, got just a few leaves with a little root. I have ordered from here almost exclusively so far. What you get is hit and miss. I vae gotten nice, full plants as pictured and scrawny little plants of the exact same type. So may have to look elsewhere for plants. You just dont know what you are going to get here.

Some came bad but otherwise ok

I didn't realize that these plants would be shipped from Florida. I saw the store was in NY so I thought there would be less time in the shipping box and the plants might show up better looking. Unfortunately I was wrong. Anyway, on to the plants. They came with a few bad leaves but I trimmed them, washed them and put planted them in my tank. We'll see how well they grow.

Nice leaves on this Val but roots had turned brown. Val is pretty hardy. So I'm sure it will regenerate
