FAQs

What lighting requirements do lily-like plants need?

Most lily-type aquarium plants prefer moderate to strong lighting. The more light you provide, the denser these plants will grow. One of the only aquarium lily types that don’t require a ton of lighting is the Banana Plant (Nymphoides Aquatica). This type of live aquarium plant will grow well even under low-intensity light.

Please make sure to review each product’s care instructions for details on lighting, substrate, fertilization, and more.

Do fish tank water lily plants improve water quality?

Yes, there are two main ways in which lily-type plants can improve water quality. First, their large leaves shade the aquarium from sunlight, keeping the water temperature cooler and preventing algae growth. Second, fish tank water lily plant roots absorb nutrients, like phosphate and nitrates, that may otherwise be waste and cause algae.

Do water lily aquarium plants reduce algae?

While nearly every type of aquarium plant reduces algae growth as they compete for nutrients, water lily-type plants also block light/sunlight. With less light, algae growth doesn’t have a chance to flourish. In addition to lily plants, you may also want to introduce algae-eating snails for the healthiest possible aquarium environment.

Do aquarium lily plants multiply?

Many water lily species can propagate and multiply on their own by creating new bulbs or reproducing through underground stems. If left alone, a single underground root system can produce three feet of water lily growth in a single year.

We recommend trimming your fish tank water lily plants frequently to maintain a stable aquarium environment. You may also choose to propagate the plant for other tanks or to share with friends.
