Description

Rotala Wallichii (Whorly Rotala)

Rotala wallichii, sometimes called Whorly Rotala, is a fine-leafed stem plant from Southeast Asia that brings a soft, feathery texture and striking pink-to-red tones to planted aquariums. When grown in groups, it forms a delicate, colorful thicket that instantly draws the eye and adds contrast to greener background plants.

Rotala Wallichii Overview

In nature, Rotala wallichii is found in slow-moving, well-lit waters. In the aquarium, it develops thin, needle-like leaves arranged in attractive whorls around slender stems, with colors ranging from greenish-bronze to warm reddish and even pinkish hues at the tips under stronger light and good nutrition. In a planted tank, Rotala wallichii is especially prized for:

  • Fine, feathery texture: Delicate, needle-like leaves create a soft, bushy look that stands out beautifully against broader-leaf plants like Cryptocorynes, Java Fern, or Amazon Sword.
  • Versatile placement: Looks best planted in groups or small clusters and can be used as a midground accent in larger aquariums or as a background plant in smaller tanks. It is especially striking when placed near dark driftwood or aquascaping rocks, where its color really pops.
  • Cover for small fish and fry: The dense, whorled foliage provides excellent shelter, breaks up lines of sight, and creates a more natural, thicket-like area for fry and small fish to explore and feel secure.

When several stems are planted together and allowed to grow in, Rotala wallichii forms a light, airy bush that adds movement and color to the aquascape without looking heavy or overbearing. Its fine leaves and warm pinkish tones make it an ideal contrast plant alongside richer greens and bolder leaf shapes, helping to create depth and a more refined, “finished” look in your planted tank.

Caring For Rotala Wallichii

Rotala wallichii is a relatively fast-growing stem plant, but it does appreciate good conditions. It generally prefers moderate to strong lighting and benefits from regular fertilization, particularly in nutrient-hungry, brightly lit aquariums. Once it settles in, it will reward you with vigorous growth and vibrant coloration, but it may need regular trimming to keep the group neat and to prevent the lower portions from becoming shaded.

Under more modest conditions, the plant may stay mostly greenish-bronze; under stronger light, with sufficient nutrients and CO₂, the new growth tends to become more intensely pink or reddish. While Rotala wallichii can survive without CO₂ injection or specialized substrate, it responds very strongly to both. Planting it in a nutrient-rich substrate such as Rio Escuro or Fluval Stratum, supplementing with quality fertilizers like Thrive, and using our Fully Automated CO₂ System with pH & CO₂ Controller will significantly boost its growth, fullness, and color.

As with most stem plants, it is best to plant individual stems a short distance apart in the substrate so light can reach each stem and the group can thicken over time. Regular trimming of the top portions and replanting the healthiest tips will help maintain a dense, bushy stand and prevent the plant from becoming leggy. Because the leaves are so fine, maintaining good water flow and consistent tank maintenance helps prevent debris from collecting in the foliage and keeps the plant looking airy and vibrant.

  • Light: Moderate–Strong
  • Temperature Range: 64–82°F
  • Placement: Midground or Background
  • CO₂: Not required, but highly recommended for strong growth and rich coloration
  • Difficulty: Moderate (more demanding in low-tech setups)
  • Growth Rate: Fast under good conditions

The tip of the stems were emergent growth but the aquatic form burst through incredibly quickly! Looks lovely and speaks volumes about the care taken for these plants.
