Description
Ammania Senegalensis (Copper Ammania)
Ammania senegalensis, often called Copper Ammania, is a stunning red/orange stem plant from West Africa that instantly becomes a focal point in any planted tank. Its leaves can display a spectrum of colors—from light green with copper tones to deep red, maroon, and even crimson—depending on light, nutrients, and overall conditions in your aquarium.
Ammania Senegalensis Overview
In the aquarium, Ammania senegalensis forms upright stems with oval to slightly lance-shaped leaves arranged opposite each other. Under stronger light and good nutrition, the green in the leaves recedes and rich copper, orange, and red tones dominate, creating a dramatic contrast against green background plants and hardscape. In a planted layout, it is especially appreciated for:
- Intense coloration and contrast: Leaves can range from greenish copper to vibrant red and maroon, making it an ideal accent or focal plant in nature-style and Dutch-style aquascapes.
- Vertical structure: As a fast-growing stem plant, it provides strong vertical lines in the midground or background and looks especially striking when planted in dense groups.
- Highlighting hardscape: The warm, metallic tones of Copper Ammania look beautiful when positioned behind or beside dark rocks and driftwood, where the color really “pops.”
- Benefits for fish and tank health: Dense groupings of Ammania create cover and line-of-sight breaks that help reduce stress for shy or territorial fish, while its fast growth and nutrient uptake can contribute to a more stable, algae-resistant aquarium when combined with good maintenance.
Planted in bunches along the mid-to-background, Ammania senegalensis forms a bold, bushy stand that immediately draws the eye. It pairs very well with lush green species like Rotala, Ludwigia, or various Cryptocorynes, and can be used to anchor a color “hot spot” in one corner of the tank or to create a red band across the background behind your main hardscape.
Caring for Ammania Senegalensis
Ammania senegalensis is a relatively fast-growing, moderately demanding stem plant that rewards good care with outstanding color. It does best with at least moderate to strong lighting and consistent fertilization. While it will grow under more modest conditions, its full red and copper tones really come out when light, nutrients, and (ideally) CO₂ are in balance.
Under good conditions—steady CO₂, a nutrient-rich substrate, and regular dosing of a complete fertilizer—the plant will grow quickly and produce compact, closely spaced leaves. If you are running CO₂, a system such as our Fully Automated CO₂ System with pH & CO₂ Controller helps keep levels stable, which in turn supports healthier growth and more consistent coloration. Supplementing with an iron-rich liquid fertilizer helps intensify red pigments and maintain that deep copper/red coloration. Without sufficient light and nutrients, the plant can become pale or leggy, with more greenish leaves.
Ammania senegalensis looks best when planted as individual stems spaced slightly apart rather than as a tight, bound bunch. This allows light to penetrate and encourages each stem to fill out. As the plant grows taller, regular trimming is important: cut the tops and replant the healthiest, most colorful tips, while removing older, lower portions as needed. This keeps the group dense, bushy, and vibrant rather than tall and sparse.
Our Modern Aquarium 6-Piece Aquascaping Tool Set (9.9") makes this kind of maintenance much easier. Straight scissors are ideal for trimming tall stems and removing damaged leaves near the surface, while curved scissors let you prune at angles and shape the bush more precisely. Straight and curved tweezers are perfect for replanting freshly cut tops and positioning individual stems without uprooting neighboring plants or disturbing your aquascape.
- Light: Moderate–Strong (stronger light brings out deeper red coloration)
- Temperature Range: 71–83°F
- Placement: Background (or tall midground grouping)
- CO₂: Not strictly required, but strongly recommended for best color and compact growth
- Difficulty: Moderate (better suited to intermediate and advanced hobbyists)
- Growth Rate: Fast under good conditions
With a bit of attention to light, nutrients, and trimming, Ammania senegalensis will become one of the most eye-catching plants in your aquarium, rewarding you with rich color and a high-end aquascape look.

My favorite
Posted by Kendra on 28 May 2020Words can't describe how magical this plant is. They came to me in thick, wavy stalks but the leaves seemed like just ordinary back row green material, BUT since being planted a week ago, they've straighten out, blossomed (literally), and have taken on a pink hue. From above, they look like flowers! They are my absolute favorite out of the five plants I bought from Modern Aquarium.

Ammania Senegalensis
Posted by Curtis on 7 May 2020I received the 2 bunches of Ammania Senegalensis. Like the other plants I ordered the roots have been cut off leaving about 3/4" of roots on the plants, which makes it very hard to plant them in an aquarium or pond.
